"The Ruby in the Smoke" is adapted from the first book in "The Sally Lockhart Mysteries" series, written by Philip Pullman in the 1980s and 1990s to recall the style of Victorian penny dreadfuls. Indeed, as a I watched this film, I wondered if it had been written at the time it takes place, the 1870s. With its intrepid but pure young heroine, handsome men always quick to help her, opium dens, Dickensonian children, haggish villainess, and an improbable and labyrinthine plot in which key action is not always depicted, this story has the hallmarks of hacks and cheap Victorian melodrama. Maybe there is a little modernization: I doubt that Victorians would have jumped to hire a teenaged female accountant -because she is a woman, whereas now she ... Read More:

Fans of science and religious horrors will find this to be an interesting combo, one that has been fighting the other for as long as we know. This however is not the source of friction in the movie, here the science takes a huge lead and infuses the movie with eerie sense of reality that some might not feel otherwise, for those who aren't afraid of the devil, this movie will chill them as there is some gross, dark stuff going on that walks a fine line between bizarre and disgusting, seeping into the real world, threatening everyone's sanity.
When professor Birack, a theoretical physicist, takes his students for a weekend of exploring in an abandoned church, he doesn't want to tell them what is going on, instead they slowly discover that ... Read More:

This is the best concert DvD I've ever seen, hands down. The Cure was MADE to play live. Let me give you some advice: get drunk on Mai-Tais and watch all three albums in a row...you won't ever forget it.

I saw this film when it played at the IFC Theater in NYC, and it's a wonderful, moving, touching, and beautiful. It's arguably Korine's best film, and it's remarkable that Korine hasn't made a film in 8 years, yet he doesn't miss a beat here.
This is the most surreal of Korine's work. It's about a commune of celebrity impersonators living in this far off chateau somewhere off the coast of Scotland. Many directors might treat these people like freaks and mock them, but Korine doesn't. He treats them with a dignity and a humanity that is sorely lacking in moviemaking today (in both "indie" cinema and mainstream moviemaking). It's the most visually accomplished of Korine's work (it's beautifully shot in widescreen, a vast improvement over the digital video ... Read More:

Hi,
I am a long time Cure fan since Pornography came out. I must admit I am a musician that plays dark rock. I understood why Robert Smith needed a break from the Gothic style but this record only reflects the most upbeat shallow and less interesting of all the songs they wrote. Love Song and Inbetween Days are the only ones that ever got air play on this CD in LA, where I was living playing with my band. I was so dissapointed when I bought this CD. I hope they make another one that includes songs from Pornography, The Top, Faith and the dark music that made their name. I do not believe Smith is a sell out, he just decided to move in different musical directions and in my opinion they all just did not work. If you like the shallow dance songs of The Cure this is for ... Read More:

Ignore the 3 rating: I honestly can't rate this movie cos I've never seen it but for those who care, yes, there is another Water Under the Bridge: With Judy Davis, David Cameron, Robyn Nevin. Australian Mini Series 9 x 1 hour episodes made for TV 1980. Based on Sumner Locke Elliott's novel about life in Sudney 1932-1948 and produced by Shotten Productions. Personally, if anyone can provide a copy I would LOVE to know about it - it was brillo.

This may be a 60s Black and White Horror Movie, but it was way ahead of its time. One could easily call it a forerunner of the excellent "Devil's Advocate." The world will probably remember Lon Chaney Jr as a gentle and sympathetic Larry Talbot who (against his will) becomes a savage werewolf. But he is a GREAT devil. The movie starts with a young woman (Kadler) who killed herself over lost love confronting the devil, and he responds: "Love? Well, love is such a stupid emotion." Many people would say that of course the devil will say that. But think about it! Isn't it stupid to kill yourself over someone who doesn't love you? But moving on, out of seeing her potential, Chaney makes a deal with her that she may escape the worst parts of hell if she delivers some items up to earth. This ... Read More:
