I bought this DVD accidentally. One moment I was looking to buy the DVD Persuasion, and the the next thing I realized I had ordered Sense & Sensibility. SO far I haven't decided what to do with the 2 I ordered.

This film is about 3 girls growing up in England in the 1930's and how they work to help support their household. I find that it is very well presented and the story line is great. I was impressed with the young girl acting in the film. They all where like watching a much older actor.
I don't think anyone would be disappointed in buying this film.

RENEE ZELLWEGER plays such a klutzy frump of a girl in this British screwball comedy that it's hard to imagine COLIN FIRTH and HUGH GRANT fighting over her. We're told that it's because she so "natural" that she has men buzzing around her. Well, that might be true if Miss Zellweger looked more like Carole Lombard. In fact, one could easily see this as a screwball comedy back in the '30s if Hollywood made the story starring Lombard, Cary Grant (not Colin Firth) and James Stewart (not Hugh Grant). Get my drift? Instead, Miss Zellweger looks more like pudgy Lynn Redgrave of "Georgy Girl," an overweight and rather awkward young woman given to wearing tight clothing and making the most inappropriate remarks at the most crucial moments. She speaks her ... Read More:

I fell in love with "The Duchess" back in 1976 when it was first broadcast, nothing has changed. The color is good and the price is right for the entire series. I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoyed Upstairs, Downstairs.
The only negative I can say about the collection is the "jewel" case packaging. When I opened the case and tried to removed the DVD's (there are a total of ten) I had a terrible time trying to "pry" them out. I'm going to go a buy a case with sleeves so I won't damage or warp the DVD trying to remove them from the plastic case it came in. I want to enjoy this over and over again.

Enjoyed watching real actors at work. The pace of the storytelling allows for the development of the characters and the plot. There is nothing like a Brit mystery!
Release Date October 26, 1999
I thoroughly enjoyed this version of one of my favourite novels. Both of the main actors gave credible and passionate performances to their characters.

It must be discouraging to Mamet to have so many completely miss the point of this movie. This movie is not about "right" or "justice" or "honor" or "perseverance" or any of the stuff mentioned by many other reviewers (at least the several that I read). It is about epigamic differentiation, a biological phenomenon known to most of you as "love at first sight". It is a romance, completely and entirely, between Pidgeon's character (Catherine) and Northam's (Sir Robert). It is all there, but disguised by the apparent story about a boy falsely accused of cheating at school, or whatever. Sir Robert falls in love with Catherine on first seeing her in his office and all his actions from then on are driven by it. She does not catch on until the last scene. It is delicious. ...
