Mystery Men

Mystery Men is a tale of wannabe superheroes in the shadow of Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear), who has cleaned up Champion City so well that he needs Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush) to be released from the insane asylum so he'll have someone to battle (his publicist insists that he must do something spectacular to appease his advertisers). Greg is great as the smarmy Captain with an insincere toothpaste grin (what there is of him before he gets fried in a psychofrakulater).

Jury Duty

"Intense Pain." Those are the two words that best summarize my feelings about the Pauly Shore travesty "Jury Duty." You know it's going to be a fabulous film when the movie opens with Shore as a male stripper whose onstage persona is "The Milkman" at the "International House of Beefcakes." Pauly Shore in a sequined thong writhing in milk is a sight I could have done without for the rest of my life.

Shore wriggles his way onto a jury in a sensational murder trial and repeatedly annoys Abe Vigoda, whose portrayal of a judge and utter contempt for Shore gets the nod for best performance in the movie. Warren Beatty's Bulworth is an ambitious, slightly muddled satire that bears the earmarks of a labor of love. Beatty co-wrote, directed, co-scored, produced, and starred in this 1998 Twentieth-Century Fox film about a disillusioned, Democratic California senator who puts out a hit on his own life. The film features a fine ensemble cast, with many of Beatty's Hollywood acquaintances filling the ranks. Familiar faces like those of Jack Warden and Josef Sommers make up some of Bulworth's friends, while Oliver Platt provides some comic relief as Bulworth's piggish chief of staff. More stars make appearances throughout the movie.

If you enjoy your baseball movies that touches the heart and soul, then Pastime is highly recommended. I have never heard of this movie until I came across Amazon and decided to order a copy. I must say I am glad I did.Williams Russ and Glenn Plummer are two minor league baseball players with great respect for one another. The movie offers some moments of excitement and of sadness. It's a movie that sure hits a home run for its story line. "Pastime"...a movie well worth your time!

I don't know what to say after reading the other reviews that rate this movie as watchable - were they watching the same movie? After a gory opener with our token lone gunslinger finding a maimed dying guy still alive after being sawed in half(!), the next few scenes feature an army of overacting bad guys and an apparently mindless character who cackles and looks like a chicken; complete with the feathers. This is apparently the director's attempt at comic relief.

These ridiculously overdressed clowns travel in automobiles with tinker-toy add-ons in a failed attempt to recapture the "Mad Max" style of adventure. Somehow, our motorcycle dude / gunslinger hero manages to act serious amidst this bufoonery.

I saw this version of Pollyanna before any other and none other has been so enjoyable. Keshia Knight Pulliam and her co-stars make this movie a wonderful treasure.
