This is a stellar performance by a superb cast and conducted expertly by Valery Gergiev. Hvorostovsky and Fleming are ideal as Onegin and Tatiana The stark set, indeed a "non-set", is at first disappointing, but does succeed in focusing attention on the human drama instead of toward lavish production elements. Color is used very effectively to saturate each scene and outline the singers. This production no doubt benefited from the close scrutiny of the camera because the performances were finely tuned and sublty nuanced. As an example, the usual "dance spectacle" accompanying the Polonaise which opens Act III is replaced here by Onegin attended to by his valet staff while changing from dueling attire to formal dress. This Gala Concert was performed on June 1, 2003 celebrating 300 years of St. Petersburg in the Grand Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. It is a glorious performance lasting nearly two hours with some solos by Anna Netrebko, soprano, and Dmitri Hvorostovsky, baritone. The St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra is a joy to hear. Some of the pieces are those composed by well known composers, although I am not acquainted with some of the other composers. A truly wonderful experience to enjoy the beautiful music and singing.

Dmitri Hvorostovsky in Concert 1998

What a treat to watch Dmitri Hvorostovsky in concert! He is a very emotional singer, showing the music is coming from deep within him, at times to the point where he appears to be unaware of his surroundings. It is a joy to watch his intense and very personal facial expressions which reflect the story and tone of the music he is singing. Often, upon finishing singing a piece, he comes out from within it, his face lighting up with his wonderful smile as he accepts bouquets of flowers from his admirers. At the end of the concert he distributes the bouquets to members of the orchestra. An incredible baritone, Mr. Hvorostovsky is always and ever a joy to listen to and watch in performance. Highly recommended!

Although I am not fond of opera, I enjoy so much seeing Dmitri Hvorostovsky perform - not just the incredible range of his voice, but his superb singing and acting abilities. His face and body are so expressive of the emotions to be projected during a scene. He has such a wide range of musical superiority! A DVD to be treasured for many years.
