The other reviewers have done such a great job heralding this film, I really can't add much more other than to say that I agree--this is just a richly made piece of art that captivates. Love it.

This is a fun escapist romp. What was at the time(1965) a pretty racy stage act with Bardot and Moreau is now rather quaint and charming. I have to admit that when it came to sex the French were certainly more open minded then we Americans were at the time. Some of the political ideology of the time effects some of the action and dialogue providing a groan and a chuckle. The great on-location photography is colorful and provides realism. Many inventive visual jokes help make this fast paced adventure enjoyable and upbeat. George Hamilton as a revolutionary?...now that's a laugh!! I would have loved to have seen this bright sunny picture when it first came out, at a Parisian theatre on a cold dark rainy afternoon.

Terrible movie, mostly because of the inadequate screenplay. But it might be impossible to film UNDER THE VOLCANO, just as it is impossible to film ULYSSES, because the story is told through the hero's interior monologue. The external events are mundane, boring. The drama is internal.
Also a terrible waste of Albert Finney, a perfect choice for the Consul. The artificiality of the situations (the movie was made on location in Mexico, but feels every bit as artificial as a movie made on a Hollywood soundstage) hamstrings him, and I don't feel he was properly directed by Huston. His drunk act doesn't quite work.
On the bright side, Jacqueline Bissett has never looked so pretty, and her performance is good.

Mario Moreno does it again with his role as an embassador in this movie. It has a lot of funny moments but not quite as much as in previous movies. The most memorable part of this movie is the ending. His speech was awesome and seemed to show us Mario Morenos true feelings at such a delecate time in history. Overall, this movie is worth buying, especially if your a Cantinflas Fan!

THE AWFUL DR. ORLOF is the masterwork from the sinister mind of genius, Jess Franco. This movie contains all of the elements for a perfect movie. We get the mad doctor himself, played by the skeletal Howard Vernon. Then there's Orlof's blind, evil assistant, Morpho (Riccardo Valle), who hunts down and kills the women that the doctor needs. Also included are the police inspector Tanner (Conrado San Martin), dancehall babes, and some peek-a-boo scenes that are quite memorable! I almost forgot to mention the Doctor's disfigured sister, Melissa, who spends the entire movie on her back- in a cage! There's even a nice dark castle to boot! Yep, this movie has all the ingredients for a cold, clammy night's viewing! There are many movies w/ similar themes that would go together ... Read More:

Perfect example of that parallel universe known as the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema. Great fun with attractive performers, rhuma dancing, mambo music and twisty mega-melodramatic plot of unwed Mom in tropical port town. Fans of Hollywoods "women's pictures" with eat this with a spoon ! Decent print with good blacks and white. Superior in every way to the similar Kit Parker release of "La Bien Pagada" (which has a soft, washed out picture, and is a bit of a stiff compared to this one). Al rato !
