This was a great concert with many beautiful arias and all three Superstars gave memorable performances. It is a "must have" for opera afficionados. Anna, as usual, is a joy to listen and watch.

....but at times they can't be avoided. Every new star evokes memories of the past...Anna Netrebko has frequently been compared to Maria Callas, and I will go ahead and provoke the anger of some by stating up front that Anna is better than Callas was the best day she ever saw. Now, I admit that, early in her career, she saw some good days; she had Style, and a fabulous voice. But, defective technique, and bad casting decisions, washed her up well before the age Anna is now. OK. Now I shall approach blasphemy...in Anna's heavier passages, I heard the merest hint of Rosa Ponselle. Anna is no Rosa. God forbid. Rosa was the greatest singer who ever lived. [Flagstad? Different genre]. She did Violetta later in her career; wonderful, naturally, but somehow ... Read More:

Do not hesitate to buy this DVD. It is worth every dollar. The four singers really stand out, Netrebko with her angel-like voice, Vargas with a wonderful tenor voice, Garanca as a colorful mezzo and Tezier as a brilliant baritone. Each and every aria are outstandingly sung and when the four of them join to sing both an aria from Rigoletto and from Traviata their voices blend wonderfully. It is one of those treasures that are worth being discovered. Javier from Bariloche

This Gala Concert was performed on June 1, 2003 celebrating 300 years of St. Petersburg in the Grand Hall of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. It is a glorious performance lasting nearly two hours with some solos by Anna Netrebko, soprano, and Dmitri Hvorostovsky, baritone. The St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra is a joy to hear. Some of the pieces are those composed by well known composers, although I am not acquainted with some of the other composers. A truly wonderful experience to enjoy the beautiful music and singing.

This is an intense and unblinking look at human relationships and the social frames in which they are set. It is about our desperate determination to fit into such frames and to uphold them, against our deepest yearnings to transcend them. There are lovelier and funnier versions of Figaro, but I doubt that there is a more gripping exploration of the interplay between the social and the personal, public and private.
The production takes many risks, but it is so daring in conception and so creative in execution that all gambles pay off. The staging is one of complex visual allusions and minutely devised choreography. While not bathed in rococo pink, it is never bleak or monochromatic. The characters dangle in hope and fear, longing to connect and ... Read More:

I found out about this DVD, from an extra on the DVD, "Anna Netrebko, the Woman, the Voice." Netrebko was just 23 when she starred in this production, and she could not have been more beautiful. Her voice matched her beauty in every way, as did her piquant acting - just the way real life should be.
Like most people, the only thing I knew about the opera was the overture, one of the all time great pot-boilers. I never tire of hearing it. The opera itself is very interesting with uniquely Russian (I can say that because apparently Glinka started it all,) combinations of voices, three basses singing with one soprano, a weirdly pitched dramatic tenor as the Bard, and a very strange trouser role of the Persian prince.
The opera's about four hours long, on ... Read More:

Anna Netrebko - The Woman, The VoiceThis DVD is the first "opera music video" ever made, and so far the only one, so it cannot be compared to anything. And neither can the incomparable, sensational Russian soprano, Anna Netrebko. She's the best thing to happen to opera since the 19th century. Well, you have to admit that Verdi, Donizetti, Bellini, Mozart, Massenet, Tchaikovsky and Gounod, and Puccini in the early 20th century, were pretty important to opera, also. I hope Ms. Netrebko and Vincent Paterson have another opera music video in the works!

This opera may not have well known or most beautiful melodies, which is the only reason I can't give it five stars; but the plot, the voices, the performances and the costumes are all outstanding. Most important, this DVD has subtitles; so that one can understand the story which, in the case of operas, makes a world of difference.

When watching this starkly modern rendition of Verdi's all-too-familiar masterpiece "La Traviata" it is best to abandon all pre-conceived notions about how this work should look and feel and just watch it for what it is: A new reading of a well-known opera. Not only is the singing universally outstanding, but the conceptualizing is refreshing and very much exciting. I, too, had my misgivings during the opening act's party scene, but I was willing to give the staging some time and discovered myself drawn in. By the end I was just beginning to fathom the ideas behind the use of a large clock to mark the passing of time and the sinister figure who later became the doctor in act three. This work will either impress or depress, but I guarantee it will not fail to leave its mark.
