Good Poems

America has no equivalent to Japan's Living National Treasures, those artisans and craftspeople whose work is considered an integral part of Japanese culture. But perhaps we should, and we would find no better person to head the list than Garrison Keillor. That he selected these poems is reason enough to read them, savor them, mull them over; and they are, in fact, pretty darned good. Right-leaning twits might disagree with my opinion of Garrison, but then I doubt they read much poetry either.

When I saw a new Garrison Kiellor novel on the shelves I lunged for it in case someone else had spied it! I anxiously awaited the quirky characters of Lake Woebegone, brought to life in his inimitable style. But what I found were quirky characters that I couldn't get connected to at all. All the elements were there but it never connected for me. I left the ending unread. And I'm not usually doing that.

Sorry, Garrison, this one didn't reach me. I will still be interested in the next, though, one dull novel does not a bad bookshelf make!

I am sorry to deflate all the reviews, but i found this book disappointing. I am totally into jokes, and live in Australia and to be honest these jokes in this book are so 'no brainers' and for me, just reminded me of Americans. I would think twice about buying this book if you live outside of the USA, but if you are an American then, oh yeah this is neat, a rad book.

I enjoyed this compilation of English Major inside humor from Garison Keillor, and I did laugh out loud a few times, but the previous reviewer is right in that the humor is very "inside" and esoteric. If you didn't just spend like four years as an undergrad and two years in grad school studying English, you probably won't find these jokes funny, or even get them. But for the nerdy bookworm English major out there, slaving over Tolstoy and rewriting that term paper, this is for you.

and I find it amazing and amusing every time.The citizenry of the fictional little town of Lake Wobegon and Keillor's brilliantly devised history of the town captivate me with every reading and I always "hear" the narrative in his calm, soothing voice, which to me makes it that much more enjoyable. Garrison Keillor is a storyteller par excellence and an American treasure.
