What a great guide for information, descriptions, color,and feel. I liked how the pages felt like they had a protective coating over them. This book will last a long time it the field.

This is a good compendium of ornithology. It contains general information on bird biology, however it is to general for university teaching. Probably it should be used together with Gill's "Ornithology".

While most people expect wonderful things from Peterson guides, this CD set is sure to let you down.

It's is very limited in the number of birds it covers. And the recordings for each bird are minimal at best.

Birders Life List and Diary

The Birder's Life List and Diary, published by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, is a great way for birders in North America to keep track of the species they identify.

The book is easy to use, with a handy quick-search guide, with birds grouped as they would appear in a field guide. Entries include the common name and scientific name, and you can enter dates, locations and remarks on your sightings. Plenty of room is given for entries. There are even occasional blanks for adding birds. I used this to add species I identifed on trips to Japan. Also included is a section on Hawaiian species, and accidental species not usually found in North America.

I use the book along with my Peterson Field Guide and am able to distinguish birds from each other by what the birds tend to eat, according to Birds At Your Feeder.

Some birds, from far away, even with your binoculars, may be so similar in appearance (size and color), and their visits to your feeders so short, that you can't get a good enough look a them. However, what they eat will help you to identify the birds. For instance, that small gray bird might be a titmouse, a thrush or a vireo. But what did they choose to eat from your feeders?
