- Didn't Know what to expect, it certainly wasn't this, but this is awesome
Not what I expected, this is very good. Much more emotional than previous work. or - More accurately, the music and the vocals/lyrics are very well balanced in a way that is much darker than their previous work. Less sexier than their older stuff (if that makes sense), edgier. Kind of like a more troubled Beth Gibbons fronting a cross between Nine Inch Nails and Bowery Electric. Very good.

... have I been so moved by a recording. Stark, bleak and truly gorgeous. One of the greatest things I've ever heard. Beyond this, I am speechless.

Long awaited...As par for Portishead they don't dissapoint. Had some concerns about how this album would sound since Portishead has not released any music for so long but( I should have known better) this album is beautiful...

That's it, quickly and succinctly - this album is fascinating. I haven't gotten all the way through it yet... but I'm entranced. I've always liked Portishead, but perhaps I wasn't as attached to their trip-hoppiness as others were, because I'm having no difficulty accepting this new offering. I'm not going to challenge all who have given thrashing reviews - to each their own. But I think Portishead is, with THIRD, challenging what we expect from music. Must music always be comfortable? Must it always, even when full of despair, be soothing? Must it have distinct expositions, bodies, rising action, climaxes, falling action, conclusions? I think not. And I think Portishead has done a fantastic job of not only answering those questions with a resounding NO, but showing us what else is possible. If you wish only to be comfortable and find closure... then stick to the old. However, if you wish to explore new universes of sound... check this out!

Unexpectedly, Portishead are back and their album exceeds all expectations. Do not forget that this is a group that defined almost itself the whole era of trip-hop with just their debut album. The follow-up was not up to that quality as was of course not the live album (which had its good sides). This however is very surprising because the band has been away for quite some time and has managed something incredible: to stay ahead of the times. the slow depressingmoody music actually represents a veryinspired continuation of thier previous work while still at the same tiemsounding new. I has actually decided not to buy the record when a friend who had bought it twice asked me if I could buy it off him. As I wrote what a surprise! not a weak track! probably one of the records of the year.
