Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - EXCELLENT
An alternate for Raidiohead fans--a unique focal voice, with a singular emotional quality, frequently gripping lyrics, good sound.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great to have them back!
They have accomplished there goal of being the same yet different. It is not a clone of previous works at all, but it is still Portishead in being avant garde electronica. Before deciding, listen to it at least twice.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - P3 is no Dummy
I'm glad I bought this album. That said it wasn't quite what I expected from Portishead. P3 is less melodic and often electronic elements disrupt the experience. Perhaps that is the point but for me the album Dummy created spaces where you could lose yourself in the music. Anytime you start to do that in P3 your abruptly brought back to the surface. Very happy to get to listen to new Portishead.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - They're back, but like Indy 4, they should have left us to our memories
A very hard album to get into, none of the instant gratification of the first 2 albums. Maybe a grower, time will tell. But if you're feeling a bit down, do not listen to this album !!!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Older & Wiser : Their Second-Greatest Album
Its difficult to imagine Portishead's relevance in a new world where there are so many underground and mainstream trip-hop and ambient artists who are doing EXACTLY the same thing that the band once did. But then again, Portishead always did sound 'different' - indeed, this was one band that did not have to 'act' angsty or 'put on' a veneer of depression. I genuinely bought the sentiment that this was a very bleak, depressed band that produced some great music to slash your wrists to.

By that token, their second self-titled album from aeons ago still holds up as the best thing they've recorded. If youre a new Portishead fan, you would do well to go out and get that record first before you listen to this one. Its seminal, groundbreaking, and largely forgotten, but I believe it deserves a wider audience even in this day and age. What is even more impressive is that it holds up to repeat listening for those cold, lonely nights when its just you and a good book. Classic.

Which brings us to "Third". Going into this with minimal expectations, I noticed two things - 1) the band does not sound as gloomy as they once did, and 2) there are far more 'rock' elements on this CD, which renders it more toward the 'indie-rock' genre, or (dare I say this) the 'emo' genre. Depending on which way you swing, this may or may not be a good thing for you. As a staunch supporter of not boxing music down with labels, I found this approach to work while listening to 'Third'.

First off, this is not a 'classic' album like their second album was. Sometimes an albums' hold upon you is associative, so you tend to be biased, but honestly, other than the opening track "Silence", I can't find anything here that holds up to their second album. There are a few great moments though. The wondrous track "Hunter" gives you the Portishead of the first album, and the charming (if somewhat ambiguous) "Deep Water" ends even before it starts (I would have loved to see them expand this into an eight-minute epic).

There are a few mis-steps however. Fan favorite "We Carry On" didn't do much for me, and neither did the tedious "Machine Gun". But shockingly, these songs sound oh-so-different on your Ipod and your home theater system. Now this must be fairly obvious - the fact that music through headphones sounds different from music on your stereo playing loudly - but "Third" is a rare beast - if you have this on your Ipod or Itunes, I urge you to get a copy on CD and play this loudly - you will notice instruments that you will NOT over headphones (and the reverse is true). Its is only through this process that I actually began to appreciate what I thought was one of the weaker songs ("Machine Gun").

"Third" may not be for everyone, and I'm giving it three and a half stars. The stark, dreary Portishead world is not one of hope - and you should be prepared for this. But if you can get past their gloominess, you will find that "Third" is actually more upbeat than some of their earlier stuff. However, if you're a new listener, please get their second album before you get this. Believe me, the music makes more sense that way.

Recommended.
