- Good but not excellent at all
This is just another Portishead cd. Nothing great and nothing new, just more of the same.

At first, I thought this album was terrible; with flat vocals and uninspired and pretentious noise filling in for the lush and skillful signature beats that launched an entire genre.
After three listenings, I still hated it.
After five, I hated it and I had a head ache.
However, after I read the reviews here, I realized that if I don't like this album, it must be because I just don't understand the music. I also realized that the thematic fulcrum of this album is heart-break and pain.
Then, suddenly, it hit me; I finally "understood."
This album gave me nothing but heart-break and pain.
It is living art.
Amazing.
If you hate yourself, buy this album. It's cheaper than buying two angry monkeys and recording them fighting each-other with power tools in your closet.

I was a fan of Portishead back in the day (90's) and think their first album "Dummy" is basically perfect. Second CD "Portishead" is also wonderful . . . so I've been waiting 10+ years for "Third." That's a lot for a work of music to live up to. Okay, so it's not perfect . . . but enjoyable nonetheless. Just doesn't grab me the way their earlier work did.

I was expecting the spacey, trippy music of Dummy. Not to be had, but this was still very good. Beth Gibbons's voice is as beautiful as ever, but this time instead of being backed by ethereal sounds and beats, it's very beat heavy and throbbing. Very different, this is not really trip hop. It's more like hip hop/torch singing, uh.. torch hop?

like talk talks laughing stock, a band is brave enough to make the music they want to make. if you dont get it, its over your head.like scott walker or mark hollis, or david sylvians blemish,this music draws from minimal composers, faust can, amon duall,terry riley. abrave comeback of true art
