Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Must have!
I just purchased this cd last week. I've listened to it 14 times already and every track is great. I've seen some negative reviews about this album. I really enjoyed it. It is a great listen. I wish her all the best. She has a bright future ahead of her.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great voice, not a perfect debut, but a great start by all means; 3 ½ Stars
Face it, Leona Lewis is exactly what record companies dream they'll find when they scout out talent. Not only does Leona Lewis have a mad sex appeal, but she can actually sing. She is actually, one of today's better singers and she is a newbie to the game. Sure SPIRIT doesn't always do her exceptional voice justice with some of its flatter material, but one great single sells the whole album ("Bleeding Love"). Once "Bleeding Love" became a huge radio hit, one knew a #1 bow from the British X-Factor winner was in store. Sure enough with 205,000, one of the year's larger bows in the CD recession (or maybe even depression), Lewis sat pretty atop the Billboard 200 Album Chart as the first British female to debut at the pinnacle with a debut album, ever! The question to ask now is, is SPIRIT itself really that good, or is it the strength of Lewis's voice and #1 hit single "Bleeding Love" selling SPIRIT? For me, it's a combination of both. SPIRIT is good, if not great, but "Bleeding Love" and comparisons to both Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston help to make this starlet's debut shine on the charts.

"Bleeding Love", certainly a shoe-in for Grammy nomination(s) at next year's ceremonies, is the perfect single. Any artist trying to breakthrough would kill to have a single or even a track as potent as Lewis's excellent debut single. A mix between pop and R&B, it straddles both styles so well that no one can deny they like (or love) the song. Let's face it, it is perfect songwriting, perfect vocal performance, perfect everything. It is definitely, the song of 2008, as of yet, easily. "Better In Time", the second track, just hopes for a shade of the greatness of the unstoppable "Bleeding Love" and it does. It is more pop-oriented than "Bleeding Love", but Lewis adds a certain amount of soulfulness with here soaring vocals. "I Will Be" is just a shade less enjoyable, but not enough to really notice. It can't quite compare to "Bleeding Love", but it is a solid track by all means. Similarly, "I'm You" is certainly single material, but again, falls short of the greatness of "Bleeding Love", which every track on this album will definitely be compared to . It is great, nonetheless. Lewis's vocal inflections and nuances are enough to qualify any track here for greatness.

On "Forgive Me", Akon's production doesn't shine as much as it did on say Gwen Stefani's "Sweet Escape". However, Lewis works with it and does make it semi-likable. It doesn't show her vocals as well as the ballads, but it isn't a flop either. "Misses Glass" is another questionable track, in which one wishes that Lewis's producers had included another big Whitney or Mariah ballad as opposed to well - this. It isn't horrible, but it isn't nearly as effective as the ballads. As always, Lewis makes it more convincing than it ultimately is. The Stargate produced "Angel" is solid, though after hearing numerous productions by the production team (Chris Brown's "With You", Ne-Yo's "Because of You" among others), it does feel a bit tired. Again, it is a prime example where Lewis sounds better than the song itself. It isn't bad, but not incredibly memorable, the overall flaw of SPIRIT as a whole.

"The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face" is both well sung and beautiful, but overall boring. It doesn't feel out of place, but you always feel there is some magic missing that might take it to the next level, aside from Lewis's well controlled vocals of course. For the first time in a couple of tracks, Lewis and song connect perfect with the listener in the exceptional "Yesterday", though still shy of "Bleeding Love" or "Better in Time". "Whatever it Takes" is solid, though not as good as "Yesterday", while "Take A Bow", "Footprints in the Sand", and "Here I Am" close the album much stronger than the middle portion of SPIRIT. Overall, Lewis and "Bleeding Love" are the best things about SPIRIT. If Lewis and her producers could truly come up with a more cohesive sophomore album, then Lewis may have a true hit album on her hands to parallel her great commercial success she's experiencing. SPIRIT is never bad, but at times it's content doesn't live up to a "Vision of Love" by Mariah Carey or "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney. Though there is one thing I do believe, that Lewis and her songwriting/production team will only get "better in time". 3 ½ stars.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - LEFT ME IN GOOD "SPIRIT"S
Never heard of Leona, until I started seeing her new video on tv.Glad I did.Amazing voice.Had to check out the album and enjoyed it a lot.The album is filled with fine ballads and upbeat dancy pop.A fine combination for my ideal pop album.Bleeding Love,Better In Time,I Will Be,Misses Glass and Angel highlight this well produced effort from Leona Lewis. It follows your formula for a smash album. It will be on the charts for a while and Leona will be an artist to watch for in the coming years. All I can say is,if you liked her first single,"Bleeding Love",go out and get this one.You will enjoy and say,I'm glad I bought it. A solid 4.5 stars for solid well-produced pop effort.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good, but "over-balladed"
This is a strong debut album from X-Factor winner Leona Lewis, the only potential problems being a surfeit of ballads, and a large dose of overexposure. The British born singer/songwriter is of Guyanese/Welsh parentage, and was no stranger to performing before catching the eye of Simon Cowell, who moved heaven, earth and Clive Davis to ensure that this album had all the backing it needed.

Even before the album was released, she already had a hit single with her version of the Kelly Clarkson song "A Moment Like This", which can be found as a bonus on the UK version of the album. Please note that the track listing for the UK Version is different to the US and Canadian releases. The songs "Forgive Me" (produced by Akon) and "Misses Glass" on this version take the place of "Homeless" (a slow R&B ballad) and "The Best You Never Had" (a slightly faster ballad).

Songs of interest are "Bleeding Love", the first single from the album; "Better in Time", the second single (pop/R&B) which reminds me of Alicia Keys "No One"; "I Will Be", a cover of the Avril Lavigne song; "Yesterday", a pop/R&B track where she sounds like Mariah Carey; "Take A Bow", a radio-friendly R&B track; and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", a cover of the Roberta Flack hit written by Ewan MacColl. Lewis also co-wrote the songs "Whatever It Takes", a mid-tempo R&B track, and "Here I Am", a pop ballad.

Special mention should be made of the powerful and emotional ballad "Footprints in the Sand" inspired by the famous poem by Mary Stevenson, which ends:

The Lord replied
"The times when you have seen only one set of footprints in the sand,
Is when I carried you."

Undoubtedly talented, strikingly photogenic, and with a lovely voice, it seems a bit early for all the comparisons to Mariah Carey and early Whitney Houston, but I do believe that we'll be hearing a lot more from Leona Lewis.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Solid start to a long career
Ms. Lewis has a powerful voice, a very sexy voice, and she can put a lot of emotion into her songs. `Bleeding Love' is an amazing song, and Ms. Lewis puts everything into the song. I did feel Ms. Lewis putting emotional singing in some other songs, `I Will Be,' `The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face,' "Take A Bow," "Footprints In The Sand." However, most of the rest of the songs are just generic, light pop songs. I really do not feel her emotion or energy. I tend to think it is not her fault, it is the song choices. Having four-five solid songs on an album is still notable. So I think this is a good album to start an incredible career. I just hope her next album she has more, better written songs that she can really connect with and put in her emotions. I eagerly await her second album.
