Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Product of the Music Industry?
So, why do "the haters" think that Vampire Weekend is simply a product of music marketing executives? Last I checked, the band is a product of four guys who play instruments and make catchy songs.

They are popular for a reason, and the reason is that they make good songs that aren't too obscurely indie, nor are they too mainstream. It's music that everyone can enjoy and is not directed toward any specific demographic of "the indie music world".

Take it for what it is - a good album packed with upbeat songs and catchy hooks. Easily puts anyone in a good mood.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Good Stuff!
Wow. I haven't felt this way since the heyday of the Talking Heads! Am I ancient? Maybe. But I also listen to a lot of music -- old & new -- and these guys ROCK!

(Kudos to Rostam!)

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best Debut ,no scratch that, best CD so far this century.
I had to chime in with a review here because I can't believe all the reviewers that call this wonderful new band derivative and unoriginal. Sure they are influenced by the Police and Paul Simon and perhaps several other great artists, but at least their influences aren't Justin Timberlake, Britney, or Eminem. This is far and away my favorite new group of the last few years(Cat Empire is a not too close second), and the great thing about this young band is you can tell they have the talent and the chops to be around for a long time and continue to experiment with a host of great sounds. Since I find the whole disc a pleasure I won't comment on the discs best cuts, but instead say that I find only 2 cuts less than superior, and those are Mansard Roof, and Campus. Even those cuts aren't bad, just not classics. Now I will let you know this is a new version of the review I wrote about this band 2 months ago. This disc has really grown on me. I can't get enough of it. So I even upped my former 5 star review, and got more gushy on these guys. Exceptional band.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Wool over your eyes.
I listen to too much contemporary music for my own good. Music generally evolves and mutates out of its immediate surroundings (Neutral Milk Hotel aside) and therefore it can be understood in a context of its own society.

Maybe it's the hype machine. Maybe it's the sweaters not being emo enough. Maybe it's the prep garage rock aesthetic. But nothing in this record neither inspires me nor feels close to what I want to listen to, nor can I understand it. All the terms applied with the music, such as "yacht rock," "cape cod," "university brats," and "African" (whatever that means ) somehow exist as accurate assessments of the music and the culture. The songs are neither inspiring nor are accurate reflections of the generation, except that one small subculture in which they exist. I don't want to get into a note to note understanding of the music (that would inspire to much ranting), or even a song understanding. Singles such as "A-Punk" sound like a failed ska song, "Mansford Roof" best part is simply the sound of the keyboard. There's not a lot to this music (and there is no intention of there being a lot), so the more you dig, the more you will find references to the small world they exist in. I appreciate the calm and "cute" areas of indie pop, I really do. But in between baroque pop, Afro pop, and prep pop, it's hard for Vampire Weekend to even get the pop part of the music right.

When our children look through our ipods and listen to "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa," Vampire Weekend better hope it has the posterity of Rick Astley or Hall and Oates. If they can even barely reach that level of infamy, then the more power to them. I simply give two stars hoping that someday they'll put down their gimmicks and write three songs in a row that don't force me to hyperventilate.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Blood-Stained Canines : Authentic, Lovable Vampires
"Vampire Weekend" is one of those rare debut CDs that will make even the most jaded ear sit up and take notice. I had heard so much about this young band before downloading their debut album, with people calling it "the first important disc of 2008". Naturally my curiosity peaked, and perhaps for the first time in a while, I downloaded an entire album without having heard even a single track beforehand.

What a revelation! Each song here is unique, and a winner. Many critics have trouble defining the actual sound of the music here, and so many definitions I've read are vague pastiches that don't make any real sense to a novice. At their best, this group sounds like an obscure folk-rock German group trying to go pop. At their worst, they sound like a regular all-American indie band that gets high on a Saturday night and sit around jamming out half-hearted tunes.

Either way, the hype is valid. And thats because of the variety here. This is quite an intelligent record because it dispenses altogether with the need for cohesiveness or length (its barely more than 30 minutes altogether) and instead go for variety. Baroque influences, reggae-tinged rhythms, coupled with orchestral passages ripped from some obscure Dvorak recording go hand in hand with a modern 'Fall Out Boy' sounding ambience, that really I don't think has been done before. I think that this band is going to have trouble on their second album though, because this 'freshness' can't always be replicated.

The much talked-about song "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" is a winner, primarily because it starts with a Hawaiian influenced guitar pick that is SO infectious (its currently my phone's ringtone). Most of these songs are short little anthems that burst out and get over just as fast as they begun. Very Weezer-sounding in places, as well.

If you haven't heard anything by Vampire Weekend, then just get this album blindly. Its one of those rare instances where an album can please all demographics - its reach far outdoes its' inherent musical worth - and despite that minor quibble, this is fantastic music for a morning while getting ready for work, or a trip in your car.
