Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Quite nice
While slightly boring, as I find all of both Joni MItchell's and Herbie Hancock records, it still is quite special and beuatiful. What helps is also the stellar cast he has assembled for this tribute. I do not regret buying it.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - It is possible to smother Joni.
I love Joni Mitchell. I love the honesty, the intensity and the openness of so many of her songs. But I'm disappointed with this album. Somehow it seems to just suck the life right out of her songs. It's like they are trying to drown her in a sleepy nostalgia. I get the sense that the vocalists get it, especially Leonard Cohen and Sonya Kitchell, but they can't overcome the drawn-out, belabored instrumental interpretations that just completely deny the urgent, confessional emotion of Joni Mitchell at her best. Even on the song Joni herself sings they manage to undercut her by mixing the piano too far forward, spending too much time interpreting and losing the dramatic momentum.

Like many "tribute" albums, it sent me rushing back to the originals. Oh Amelia... I wish I had a river... They don't get it, they just don't get it. It comes so close with Leonard Cohen channeling a Harold Budd-style recitation for The Jungle Line... but too much piano blunts it. Herbie! Get out of the way of the material, please please please!

Still... I don't regret buying this, and I will continue to listen to it. I just have to let go of the idea that they worship the same Joni icon that I worship. :-) I hope to learn to appreciate it for it's own merits, somehow disconnected from my perceptions of Joni Mitchell. Maybe I can do that. Maybe.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - (Mysterious Songs) Delicately Extraordinary
At this darkest astronomical season, here is a CD to behold and revere.
Feel, the angst, feel the love!!!!
The combination of Joni's lyrical profundity and Herbie's deep musical sensitivity, confirms the great artistic integrity these two legends bring to this work.
"Hiroshima cannot be pardoned", "this world is shattered", "the wise are mourning", "Tokyo Rose is talkin'on the radio". (Joni's powerful lyrics from her song Tea Leaf Prophecy) Eerily prescient insights(I mean today our very own Tokyo Rose is controlling our media). This all resonates for today's catastrophes abroad.
Herbie's instrumental piece's are quite simply sublime. The piano intro. to "Tea Leaf Prophecy" can only be described as otherworldly. Salve for the soul.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Herbie Hancock and Joni Mitchell?
This is a BEAUTIFUL release by Herbie Hancock. HH Playing Joni Mitchell; How good can it get? I'll name some; Wayne Shorter on saxophone and Dave Holland on Bass; More? How about Tina turner, Norah Jones, Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell herself;
It's Simple, whether you like rock, Jazz, Joni Mitchell or Herbie Hancock, no one can go wrong buying this album. To say the least; highly recommended and much more

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Album of great substance!
Impressive album with stellar performances by all involved. Tina Turner sounds great on jazz material, Wayne Shorter is in A-1 form and Herbie floats over changes like no other pianist. Oh...and Joni sounds great too! :)
