Herbie Hancock proves himself once again a perceptive interpreter of other composers as well as a wonderful composer in his own right. Here he has touched the complexity of the music of Joni Mitchell in a way that listens to it deeply and rifts on it in new and fun ways. I have listened to this CD every day since I got it.

These kind of projects can so easily go wrong and turn into disappointing dreck but here we have first rate singing from all concerned, especially Tina Turner outstanding singing Edith and the Kingpin and a deeply moving Leonard Cohen. Sensitive instrumental playing throughout though one wonders why the interjection of tunes not Joni's such as Wayne Shorter's wonderful Nefertiti. Joni's fans should enjoy it. Highly recommended.

One measure of a good album--to me, at least--is how excited I am to tell other people about it after a couple of listens. That said, the jury's still out on this one for me. Personal highlights include Tina Turner singing "Edith and the Kingpin," Corinne Bailey Rae's take on "River," and Herbie's intriguing accompaniment throughout. I also dug Leonard Cohen's guttural monotone on "The Jungle Line," here turned into spoken word. For some reason, though, it's hard for me to get excited about this album as a whole, and I suspect more than a few listeners might feel the same. Three stars for consumate musicianship and for tackling three songs from "The Hissing of Summer Lawns," my favorite Joni album. With so much music to listen to, though, I can't say when or if I'll return to this one.

While slightly boring, as I find all of both Joni MItchell's and Herbie Hancock records, it still is quite special and beuatiful. What helps is also the stellar cast he has assembled for this tribute. I do not regret buying it.
