Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - An artist who recylces more than aluminum!
Do you love ripoff artists such as Lenny Kravitz and Norah Jones? Does true originality disturb you and drive you to seek cover in the soft womb of corporate created fluff marketed as the real deal? Then you're in for a treat with this album! Not even Rich Little could do Billie better. Texture of voice AND delivery expertly stolen without a qualm, but without any of the icky sincerity and authentic pain of the original. Enjoy!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Very Disappointing
Although I am a Madeleine Peyroux fan (thought her previous 2 albums were excellent) I am afraid her latest output 'Half the Perfect World' should have been called 'Music to Put You to Sleep By' It is so slow and dreary that it takes immense willpower not to (a) turn it off or (b) go to sleep.
To me she hasn't produced one good song throughout the album even making the old favourites 'The Summer Wind' and 'Everybody's Talking' sound extremely ordinary. Very disappointing.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - awesome musician, bad-quality sound on the cd
Madeleine Peyroux is an incredible musician. I saw her live and I was amazed at her talent, and how alive her interpretations were. But on the album it doesn't come across at all. It sounds really bad, like the album wasn't mixed properly. At first I thought someone had changed the settings on my stereo. But my other albums sound fine. There's something really weird about the sound on this album. What a shame because Madeleine is soooo good- you have to go see her live and hear these sounds as they're meant to sound.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Sailing on a Summer Breeze
"Half the Perfect World" is an excellent set from Madeleine Peyroux. I enjoy the music and hit the repeat button on a number of its tracks. One of my favorite studio musicians, Dean Parks, is on every track. Dean has played on some of my favorite albums like Jimmy Webb's "Land's End," Carole King's "Wrap Around Joy," & Art Garfunkel's "Angel Clare"; so it is a delight to hear him on Madeleine's set. With its French lyric, "La Javanaise" makes me think Edith Piaf despite Peyroux's cool breezy vocals. Of her originals, "California Rain" is a delight with its happy guitar strum and the juxtaposition of Peyroux's wistful vocals, "What a fool to be ambitious, Moving here with all my wishes, Far away, far away from where my heart is." "I'm Alright" is a story-song that makes you feel like you've been sitting in a bar listening to this woman pour her heart out about her last relationship. Of the cover songs, my 2 favorites include "Blue Alert" with David Piltch's throbbing bass on the Leonard Cohen-penned song, "It's just another night I guess, all tangled up in nakedness; You even touch yourself, you're such a flirt." The Fred Neil song that Nilsson made famous from "Midnight Cowboy" was always one of my favorite melodies, "Sailing on a summer breeze, skipping over the ocean like a stone." Madeline turns it to a lonesome tune like a hometown girl lost in the big city; it's lovely. When a song like Joni Mitchell's "River" has been so often recorded, it's hard to bring something new to the sound. Recordings include Betty Buckley, Rosanne Cash, Holly Cole, Robert Downey Jr. [on Ally McBeal], Heart, Indigo Girls, Barry Manilow, Naked Barbies [true confession: I've never heard this band, but their name was too good to leave out of the review], Dianne Reeves, Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor and Sloan Wainwright. In Madeleine's hands with help from K.D. Lang, it becomes a lament filled with longing and shades of sadness. The other tracks are also strong like "Smile" & "The Heart of Saturday Night." This beautiful set has been jamming my changer since its arrival. Enjoy!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - STRANGE FRUIT.
Madeleine Peyroux's occasionally acidic voice has drawn comparisons to Billie Holiday, which, while not entirely amiss, tended to overlook a singular facet of Holiday's style: When Holiday sounded like she was keeping something from you, it was because it hurt too much to be expressed. Peyroux's floating, Georgian-inflected alto, though similarly enigmatic (a "Mona Lisa voice," wrote New York Times cabaret critic Stephen Holden), seems to barely conceal excessive happiness.
Take Half the Perfect World's opening track, "I'm All Right". She's dating a lout, who "makes her cry", and who "threw a few of my things around", but it's all right, because she's been lonely before.
She sings it with resignation, but where Holiday, for all her strength, would've made you feel pity, Peyroux impresses you with her resilience. Consider it the postfeminist style of female jazz vocalism.
With its chunk-chunk guitar, brushed drums and B3 organ, the stage is set for Peyroux to lay down a soft-focus album--and she does. The title track, by Leonard Cohen, is turned into a soft samba, and Joni Mitchell's "River" is sung with k.d. lang, who doesn't steal the spotlight.
In a world clogged with mediocre jazz chanteuses--with the dreaded Norah Jones at the front of the line--Peyroux's soul and melting voice stand out, way out, from the pack. She remains a happy enigma.
