- Genuine talent with an old fashioned charm
Madeleine Peyroux comes across as an artist older than her years.
Even though she is only in her early 30's, her music and voice sound like they belong to the previous generation.
The fact that Peyroux's voice absolutely reeked of her Billie Holiday influences somewhat tarnished that breakthrough album "Careless Love".
For her new album, "Half The Perfect World", she showcases the emotional core of songs by other singers and songwriters she's admired, and also displays her talents as a writer on four songs she co-wrote, keeping a distinctly romantic edge.
The CD is slightly less heavy on the Holiday-isms but more intriguing in the song selection.
For Peyroux tackles the love songs she loves, treating them to timelessly jazzy readings.
Given the makeover are Johnny Mercer's "The Summer Wind", Leonard Cohen's "Blue Alert", Joni Mitchell's "River", Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'", Tom Waits's "(Looking For) The Heart Of Saturday Night", Serge Gainsburg's "La Javanaise" and Charlie Chaplin's "Smile".
The album conjures in the mind imagery of smoky bars, music lifted from the screen of an American feelgood movie. Drums are always light brushes, barely touching the skins, guitars light and fruity, clearly a double bass rather than an electric.
No cutting edges are approached, no taboos challenged, but it is a pleasant amble through familiar territory.

I commute (car) and my CD player is central in keeping me sane. So, a good judge of good music for me any way is how often I want to listen to an artist's work. Madeleine's "HalfPerfect World" has been a smash hit. For the past 8 weeks now I have listened about 4 times per week. I just do not get board hearing her excellent pitch, diction, facinating arrangements and fine writing/choice of blues/jazz tunes. Sam Yahel's piano accompanyment is artful and deserves a listen on his own right. I first was made aware of her work via a Radio Jazz program out of Cleveland,Ohio. While driving home up my country road at 8:30 pm her of Glenn Cambell's "Everybody's Talkin' came up and I was messmerized. I have also purchased her "Careless Love" CD and listen frequently to that as well.

Peyroux sings Leonard Cohen well and really makes his songs her own. The weariness in her voice suits them. I'd love to hear her sing more straight-up jazz standards, but she's probably and rightly still trying to avoid comparisons to Billie Holiday, whose voice her own strongly resembles. She could probably also stand to live a little more on the bright side of life. Her shabby chic voice would provide brighter material with depth. She's clearly trying to find her own repertoire. There are successes here and there. She's still someone to follow. She has a gift, she has a good ear for poetry. It might help her to take herself a little more seriously each time, and stop futzing around. Lay it down, girl, life is short. Maybe spending some time in Moron de la Frontera would help.

Having been listening to Medeleine Peyroux since her debut album it is great to see this singer keep producing such wonderful products. Easy on the ears and good choice of material for her. A very sophisticated lady.
