They're good songwriters, good musicians, and yeah the guy's a good singer albeit Thom Yorke will always be better...
The problem with this album is it's production. Way overproduced to the point that half of the backing voices are completely superfluous and in many cases, cheesy.
If you're sensitive to production taste, be cautious with this one.

I was super-skeptical about Muse, having only heard the overplayed hit "Supermassive Black Hole" (which is a great song, just way overplayed on Alt Nation). After hearing that song a few hundred times, I thought Muse was just a one-hit wonder and a little too synth-pop for my taste. However, I heard Knights of Cydonia once, and decided to pick up the album. So glad I did! Now, Muse is on my list (along with Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Doors, Pink Floyd, and a small number of living bands) as at least a potential All Time Favorite - another 2-3 albums like this one and they will cinch that spot for me!
Fast paced, soaring, "big" music. Reminds me of The Moody Blues at their very best (and I am a huge fan of the Moody Blues!). Muse has a style somewhere in the triangulation among Pink Floyd, The Moody Blues and Emerson Lake & Palmer; but of course they are talented and it would not do them justice just to say that alone. So many good songs. I strongly recommend listening the the album from start to finish - like Pink Floyd, Muse's music hangs together as a whole and individual "radio" hits are more enjoyable as part of the hole. Having said that, Starlight and Knights of Cydonia are fantastic, definitely my "turn it way up" favorites on the album.

one of the best bands ever and best cds ever(next to absolution)! its a new age rock style with a little less hard rock and more of a dance like beat, which i think will continue with their next cd. its not as good as the other cds for old fans that like muse for their fast melodic hardcore rock style. the difference is the electronic beat and more vocals which gives it the dance style. despite the changes with black holes. it still muse and has the core sound of the old muse and has the alt hard rock style like tool. now with 70+ songs theres an array of different rock stylesfrom muse. muse has a song everyone will love.
almost all bands go through some sort of musical style change, luckily this is probably the best change muse couldve made to get very high recognition in the states. i got it the first day and got it signed (the cd looks better autographed). all i think you should do is get this cd if you already dont have it!!! you wont regret it.

Black Holes and Revelations is fair. I think Origin of Symmetry and Absolution are much better, with the latter being the best effort to date. The album is a bit political. Been there, heard that. Is it just fashion that artists have to spout their political views?

come on, people...face it. radiohead? they could never do this music. too complex...too powerful. radiohead is a stoner band...drifting...all about feel and pulse... muse is very different. they are consumate musicians and the precision here is absolutely stunning.
