- A Great "Pickup"
One of the better albums I have picked up recently.Knew the song,"Lazyeye" and was ready see what else the album had to offer.Definitely a lot more.Yes ,Silversun does have Smashing Pumpkins likeness in their own way.But well worth buying this effort.Well Thought Out Twinkles,Little Lovers So Polite,Future Foe Scenarios(maybe my fave on album),Melatonin and Three Seed highlight this well crafted album. If you are a fan of Lazyeye and want to see what else this album has to offer,buy it now. You probably will find something better.As good a song Lazyeye is.A band you will hear a lot of in 2008 and well beyond.

Really! I've played this album 100 million times and it still sounds fresh--haven't been this obesessed since Spoon's "Gimme Fiction." The sound is driving and anthemic but somehow tender at the same time. They also rock in concert. A few songs stand out to me, "Lazy Eye" and "Rusted Wheel" but they're ALL good, the album feels of a piece. Buy it and ENJOY!

This music brings back memories of college radio just before grunge hit in the late 1980's. It reminds me of the older Pumpkins material. Carnavas is a very well done album, but the only complaint I have is that it is a little overproduced.

Basically some reviews always show up for this album and say a few things that are completely wrong, so I wanted to correct them:
- They DO sound like the Pumpkins. After Sinead, the Pumpkins are my favorite artist of all time, and the Silversun Pickups sound like them in almost every way. That does not reduce my opinion of the Silversun Pickups.
- Lazy Eye is an incredible song. It might not be quite as good as the Pumpkin's best work, but it, along with several other songs from Carnavas, could fit in on Siamese Dream and sound good.
- Lazy Eye is NOT too long. The second half of the song, which is mostly guitar, is also incredible.
- Comparisons to Autolux and Sonic Youth are ridiculous. I bought CDs by both artists hoping they could come close to the Silversun Pickups. They cannot. While both of those artists do have some redeeming work, they just aren't in the same league as Silversun Pickups.
Other thoughts:
- This is the best guitar rock group to come out since Tool.
- Pikul is also quite good, but not as good as Carnavas.

Although I feel like I was slightly mislead by the 2 singles, (which portray a much faster and more rock-oriented CD than what we got here,) I was pleasantly surprised, after a couple listens, how much I liked some of this music. Some songs are slow, some songs are fast, almost all of them are extremely trippy and otherworldly. Checkered Floor is one of the best songs I've ever heard, an example of a "perfect song" and the CD may be worth purchasing just for the song alone...if you like the other stuff on it too, of course. Some of it hits, some of it misses. Well Thought Out Twinkles, the 2nd single, is a great rock song, both very catchy and with hints of some of the CD's more "spacey" nature. Lazy Eye, the first lead single, turns out to be almost 2 full minutes longer on the CD than the radio/music video version, and honestly I thought the edit was better. Still, it's a nice song.
Waste It On is a really good song, although I wish the chorus was expanded on. Some really cool lyrics present, though. In general, the lyrics on the CD don't make much sense, but they're definitely cool to listen to. Common Reactor's a fast and cool ending to the CD. Future Foe Scenarios is the perfect showcase of both the rock and the "pass out" style music featured on the CD. Dream at Tempo 119 is decent but forgettable.
Even in some of the "too slow" songs like Rusted Wheel and Three Seed, the ambient noises and catchy choruses keep things somewhat interesting, even if they feel a little long and aimless. There are a couple bad songs on here; Melatonin, the 1st song, didn't really do anything for me at all, and neither did Little Lover's So Polite.
But overall we have a very interesting, unique, and very spacey CD here. The voice of the lead singer's also pretty interesting, and his transitions from singing to screaming are actually subtle and well-integrated. A couple more basic rock songs would have been appreciated (to match the tone of the 2 singles) as could some editing on a couple of the more aimless songs, but Carnavas is a good CD and is worth listening to.
