Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - "slip them into different sleeves!"
The Smiths said it best in their song about the corrupt greed of the music industry _Paint A Vulgar Picture_: "Re-issue, re-package/re-evaluate the songs/double pack with a photograph/extra track (and a tacky badge)". That's exactly what's happening here: they've taken songs you already know and love and slapped some new cover art onto them, regurgitated them in a sequence different than you are accustomed to hearing them, thrown in a couple of "bonus tracks" and some news articles. Big deal. If you're already a TMBG fan, chances are you already own 98% of the material that is presented here in the Dial a Song collection (and really, is "Boss of Me" really that great a song? It's one of the very few TMBG songs I find totally annoying). Why buy them all over again? ...

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - How can you miss this?
As a long-time TMBG fan, I think this album does exactly what it advertises: It presents both seasoned Giants vets and new fans with the best songs from the band over the last 20 years. This album is great if you already own all the albums (it's like the mix CD you never quite get around to making) or if you've never heard of the band: You OUGHT to know They Might Be Giants, and this two-disc set is full of the catchy tunes that make them so loveable.
Five starts, A+, 100%, this is a really great album that no music fan should miss.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great, but could have been better
I own all of the TMBG studio albums and more, yet I will buy this album as well. Why? Because:

a) I love having all these great songs on two discs. It's like a TMBG mix tape, of which I have many. If I had a CD burner I would have made my own long ago.

b) I enjoy having "Dr. Worm" (probably one of the three best TMBG songs) and "Why Does the Sun Shine?" on albums I actually like listening to.

c) "Boss of Me" I don't have this song.

However, there are some songs on here that don't deserve to be on here, including the grating "Cyclops Rock" and "Hotel Detective." And there are many songs missing that should have been included, such as the classic "Rhythm Section Want-Ad," "I've Got a Match," "Hovering Sombrero," etc.

But the biggest mistake of all is not including "Sensurround." As far as I know, the only legitimate place to get this song is to buy the soundtrack to the "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers" movie. Other songs on the album include Snap's "The Power" and a Van Halen song. Needless to say, I don't listen to that album much. But "Sensurround" is a wonderful song. That it was left out is a travesty.

Nevertheless, this is a great collection for a beginner fan. My brother, who is one of those thousands of folks who just owns "Flood" and no other albums, said he's considering picking this up.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Do Not Buy This
I have loved TMBG since 1992. They are beautiful, funny, sad, melodic, and smart. They rock live. They are everything music is supposed to be. Their real albums are brilliant, indispensible, must-have essentials of any respectable music collection. Having said that, I'll explain why you should not buy this.

First of all, the title is misleading. Dial-A-Song is a wonderful service where TMBG make available to the public, for the price of either a phone call to Brooklyn or an internet connection, lo-fi versions of new songs and weird experiments. A comprehensive box set of those recordings would absolutely thrill hardcore TMBG fans. We're still waiting on that, though.

No, this greed based album is just one in an ever expanding list of superflous TMBG compilations. As an introduction to the band, no career overview could ever be as good as their 1990 album Flood. Get that, and if you like it, get Then: The Earlier Years. If you like that, you'll figure out the rest.

But my real problem with this album is that there are 3 tracks on it that are unavailable anywhere else. If I, a hardcore fan who already has the FORTY NINE other songs, want those three, I have to plunk down 35 bucks. Great. Now I'll have 3 choices next time I want to listen to Ana Ng. Thanks but no thanks. At least when Elvis music came out on such crummy compilations he had the excuse that it was Colonel Tom Parker's or Joan Deary's fault.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - An *Excellent* "Best Of..." Album
To clarify, what you're looking at is *not* a compilation of rarities, alternate studio cuts, or live performances (so what if the album title references their Dial-a-Song service? it means *nothing*...), but a yay-happy-twentieth-anniversary celebration of some of the Giant's greatest releases, spanning from their very first album through their latest release, the youngsta-oriented "No!" Also included are two previously-available-only-on-soundtrack tracks, the "Malcom in the Middle" [extended] theme, "Boss of Me" and "Dr. Evil" from Austin Powers II.

What I love most about this item is that it's not exclusive to the more popular TMBG singles, and includes a few old-school, lesser-known gems like "Nightgown of the Sullen Moon", "Snowball in Hell", and "She Was An Angel" (by my definition, one of the best Giant songs to ever exist).

For most TMBG fans, this CD brings few surprises...but that's no reason to shrug it off. As I said earlier, this is a great-great-wonderful collection of songs and, by *far*, one of the better "Best Of" albums that I've ever encountered. My recommendation? Open your wallet in the name of supporting quality music, and buy the li'l darlin.
