- The Greatest Movie Composer of All Time
John Williams is unarguably one of the best in the business of soundtracks, his uncanny ability to set the mood in any movie is unmatched. From the suspense of "Jaws," to the soft sounds of "ET," all the way to the pure inspirational tones of "Duel of the Fates," Williams is a master. It is clearly apparent why George Lucas and Spielburg prefer his art in their movies. Get this CD, or any of his works, you shan't be displeased.
Rating: - Does It Get Much Better Than This? No.
A disc one buys in order to have E.T., Superman, Indiana Jones, The Imperial March, Jurassic Park, Home Alone, Jaws and Schindler's List all in one place, and on which one discovers tremendous delights like Far and Away, JFK, Born On The Fourth of July, the Parade of the Slave Children from the Temple of Doom, and a version of the Star Wars theme which manages to be different from the other five copies of it one might happen to have. The Star Wars theme seguays from the opening credits music into the familiar ending credits arrangement quite smoothly. Only part I found to be significantly overrated was Saving Private Ryan's Hymn To The Fallen.
A terrific buy and yet, of course, not an excuse not to buy some of the originals, particularly those of the Star Wars variety. I would warn though that, by my judgment, the supremely valuable 3 minutes and 42 seconds that one gets of E.T. here is an extremely wiser purchase than the very long and very boring soundtrack on which it is the only exciting moment. The surprise highlight moments for me have to be the Home Alone theme which rivals Edward Scissorhands in quality and effect and Far and Away which showcases Itzhak Perlman's ability to make a violin dance. Having only known his work from the Schindler's List soundtrack, I was delighted to find this track with him here.

Passion...that's the only word that comes to mind...Try to imagine any of these films without the John Williams touch-not the same, are they?... John Williams not only sets the tone for the film, but also lets you leave the theater whistling the theme of what you just experienced...If there is one criticism I must convey about this album, it is that they omitted the theme from 1972's "The Cowboys"...Never a big Western fan, it's the first movie that plucked the strings, if you know what I mean...(the only other that comes close is Bruce Broughton's "Silverado")...Cudos to Mr. Williams-Your talent is unsurpassed, whether it be the tenderness of "Schindler's List" or the fun of "Swing, swing, swing" from "1941"...you've got a fan for life...
