Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Absolutely Beautiful
When I first bought this album in 1999 my musical tastes were very......different than they are now. I listened to "Muscle Museum" a couple of times and then put the album away. Recently, I discovered that this is one of the greatest albums I own. When I sat down and listened to the album in its entirety I was absolutely blown away. The music is, in my opinion, very original, and the vocal style of Matthew Bellamy is definitely his own. There may be a hint of Thom Yorke in his style, but I didn't hear the similarity until it was pointed out to me. I've been a big Jeff Buckley fan for a while now, and that is who Bellamy reminds me of. However, he definitely creates a unique sound, and a very emotional feel w/ the music. This album is a must have for any music fanatic. If you are wondering about purchasing the CD, try and download the song "Showbiz" and you will be sold. I've just purchased The Origin of Symmetry and I'm sure it will turn out to be as good as Showbiz.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Drawn in from the beginning
I have to admit that I was drawn to Muse at first because I thought they sounded like Radiohead, but after buying this cd and listening to it many many many times, I'm finding new reasons to name Muse as one of my top-five favorite bands. The music is fantastic and all the songs have something a little different to offer than the one before, so playing the album isn't like listening to the same song over and over. I like Matthew Bellamy's voice, and his range is amazing. Definitely a good cd worth your time and money.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Its sounds kind of like Radiohead, but its still good
I really don't know what made me buy this album, maybe it was the video for Muscle Museum which kind of reminded me of Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun. Anyhow, these guys sound like Radiohead, there's no denying it, Muse even states in interviews that their two biggest influences were the Bends and Nevermind. And to be perfectly honest, I've had just about enough of Radiohead and its imitators, it seems like the high pitched Thom Yorke vocal style is all over the place now.

Regardless, Showbiz is still a good album, and its just different enough from Radiohead for Muse to be considered a unique artist and not just a rip-off. The guitar noises are often somewhat frantic, the songs are all well-produced, and the album is very coherent. Some of the songs take a bit of getting used to, especially the third track, but they'll grow on you. Matthew Bellamy obviously has a real flair for writing big, epic songs, so I can only imagine what Muse is going to be like in the future. So Radiohead similarities aside (its really just mostly the vocal that does it), Showbiz is a good album. And even if Muse has yet to make its own OK Computer, their debut Showbiz is still 10x better than Amnesiac.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Intelligent music
Sadly this great debut album will never be reconised for the ground breaking sound it gives. With all mainstream pop artists giving exactly the same [stuff] put with 1 or 2 "catchy"
tunes per album it seems kinda sad that Muse have to be kicked down for having a hint of RH in their sound. Maybe the Radiohead fans are just a little bit irritated that a band with sharp vocals and crispy overdrive have made a album that is far better then RH's Debut and if not for all the bad publicity could give The Bends a real run for it's money. As it is you are just going to have to take my word for it and give the album the chance it deserves. My fav song is Unintended which is just about the most beautiful song I have ever heard completely smashing any pop "love" song to ground. Showbis took a little time to get to like but now it is a close second because of the fantastic high notes Matt reaches the gasping prepares you for the amazingly painful vocals with a just so much better then anyything RH ever did. If you into beautiful and emotional songs then this is the perfect album. But if you can't get over your pride about RH then take a look at Muse's second album with is very different but possibly better the Showbis. Enjoy

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Muse is NOT Radiohead--and that's a good thing!
This is a fantastic debut album from what I consider to be the best band to come along in a VERY long time. I bought Muse's second album, Origin of Symmetry, before I bought this one and expected to be disappointed by this first album. I am happy to say I was more than pleasantly surprised by Showbiz--I was blown away! Dare I suggest that this album surpasses its follow-up because the songs on Showbiz are a bit easier to grasp the first time around. The three members of the band are full of so much passion for what they're creating that the energy overflows into the music.
Play this in your car, and you will be enveloped by a flood of rich, creative sound that does not sound like Radiohead. One may draw similarites between the two groups, but in my book Muse wins out for going several steps further with the volume. I cannot tell you how elated I am that a contemporary band is actually making music worth listening to, and I'm not even a devout follower of the indie/alternative scene. (To all Queen fans, of which I am one: it is possible that even Queen weren't this solid on their first album.)
If you like music that is lyrically thought-provoking, unique, emotional, and simultaneously loud and beautiful, check this out! You will not be disappointed.
