- Hate this and I'll hate you....
Muse's recent commercial and critical success for 'Absolution' has certainly been deserved, with 'Absolution' one of the, if not THE, finest albums of 2003. With their second album 'Origin of Symmetry'(an album which I personally think is very average) already quite famous due to the singles 'newborn' and 'plug in baby', I sometimes look back at Muse's first effort and feel it's a bit....left behind.
Which I consider to be a major major musical crime, as 'Showbiz' is, in my eyes, their best album.
It Starts with the immense, infectious 'Sunburn' (a song which shows us the whole range of Matt Bellamy's instrumental range), and moves swiftly onto 'Muscle Museum', one of the best songs off this album and Muse's career. These two songs really do set the tone for the rest of this very fun collection of songs.
The seventh track, 'Unintended', is a wonderful slow song, showing that Muse can do so much more than fast-paced rock anthems. While 'Showbiz' is one of the most perfect semi-rock numbers you'll ever hear.
I have a lot of friends who haven't really heard much of this storming debut, and still consider 'Origin of Symmetry' to be Muse's best album (even though Absolution is twice as good). However, nothing will ever make me think that mUse will produce a finer album than this. Showbiz's sheer energy and diversity make it a must-have for any real music loving fan.
And I'm still not that sure how they really sound like Radiohead in ANY of their periods......

this cd is the one that got me hooked on muse. i live in canada and my friend that lives in the uk mailed it to me after being shocked at the fact that i had never heard of muse.
definately worth the money.

This is one of the best CDs i've heard. What makes it particularly marvelous is the fact that it's a debut album. It doesn't happen often that a debut album is very good. But Muse have made a superior one. All of the songs are just great. Particularly, Unintended, Muscle Museum, and Uno are simply fantastic. Although this is just their first album they have already moulded their own style: wonderful falsetto, great contrasts (e.g. in Uno and Showbiz), and amazing piano sections (e.g. in Cave, Fillip). This is one of the best CDs of punk alternative.
Rating: - Music for the new Millenium
Less avant-garde than their friends at Radiohead, Muse produce a fresh and moving style for 'rock music' in the post-OK Computer period. With the music industry becoming ever more homogenous, a new and promising band to which discerning listeners can flock to is a step in the right direction. Perhaps there is hope for artistic rather than commercial music in the new millenium.

Often Compared to Radiohead? Why? They sound nothing like Radiohead.
This is not a qualitative statement. I'm not suggesting that they stink because they don't sound like radiohead. It's an unfair comparison to make. They really sound nothing like any stage in Radiohead's history.
They sound a bit like Jeff Buckley (only not as good) might have if he'd had a good band behind him.
Somewhere between Queens of The Stoneage and Klaus Nomi.
Go for it if you like loud and melodic at the same time.
If you're listening to a band like Thursday or Rooney, put your crap down and buy this, it's along those lines... but good and actually musical... after you buy it, go try to develop some taste for a change.
