Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Amazing!!!
I first heard of MUSE when a mate lent me the showbiz album, and since then they have rose to the top of my favorite bands. Lead singer MATT BELAMY shows off his fantastic vacal talent in each of the great tracks on this CD. He also shows he can do a trick or two with his guitar. with a good mixeture of soft, smooth vocal arrangments and loud up beat bass filled tunes this album really is one of the best debut albums ever released, buy it today. Also watch out for THE ORIGIN OF SYMETRY coming june 18th!!

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - I'm trying to like this album but...
this band is K-Mart Radiohead, there's no getting around that, try as I may to like this CD and feel like I haven't wasted my money. There are some redeeming qualities like the single and only stand out song "Muscle Museum," but this album has no depth whatsoever.

It's a good thing the boys in Muse make no bones about loving Radiohead cause they've used all pre- Kid A Radiohead material as a blueprint but instead of creative lyrics and risk taking musical ventures, they substitute cheesy lyrics and formulaic song structure.

The lead singer tries real hard with the Thom Yorke imitation and almost succeeds but uninspired imitation is really boring. Don't get me wrong, he's got a good voice but my advice would be to develop your own style, it just gets more and more irritating especially towards the end of the album. I found myself thinking..."okay, this is the last track? please?"

I do give 'em an A for effort though...it'll be interesting to see what Muse does next, who knows? maybe the next album will smoke this one and I'll completely change my mind about them. Right now I have the feeling these guys may be the route of "where are they now?"

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - none
I bought this album after hearing the singles 'sunburn', 'muscle museum' and 'unintended', all of which I had liked. I was aware that Muse were always being labelled Radiohead pretenders but I thought is that so bad? I mean, i love radiohead

I got the cd along with about 5 others and it kinda got forgotton. At last I gave it a few listens and thought the album was boring and bland - nothing comparing to the singles. So it got left to one side, but i came back to it a few months later and, after listening through it all, I did find a few tracks I liked. I think i went and gave it 4 stars at some website at the time, but it really only deserves three I can see now.

Muse are good in parts...but I wouldn't compare them so closely to Radiohead...they don't have that spark. Still this album is fun in places, but as their second album and everything is comin up in the United K now, from what I've heard I don't think they've moved on much or travelled down a different lane, as Radiohead did. Yes experimenting doesn't always work but churning about the same stuff, no matter how cute, gets tedious.

I'm really makin much sense here but I'd say, to sumarise...it's good, but not THAT good.Kay?

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - a gem of an album
This is a truely all time great album for me, the songs Muscle Museum and Unintended are very powerful songs and Unintended is quite moving. The song contrasts from the firery Sunburn to the calm Unintended and it all gells together niceley. Its a shame more people aren't aware of this great talent, just becuase they are not overly publisised like Hear'say or Westlife there talent goes to waste. A lot of bands nowadays, like Hear'say, aren't in the industry for the right reasons, all they care about is their special number one and the amount of cash they will get out of it. The week leading up to their number one they appeared on 3 shows a day, Muse didn't publicise Muscle Museum at all and it failed. The new song Plug in baby is getting around though and it is sonetimes getting radio play, but nowhere near enough, i can rank Muse up there above radiohead and just as good as the sterophonics, i strongly recomend this album.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Combines the innovation of indie and the energy of grunge
This is a phenominal debut. Muse are fairly popular in the UK (their biggest hit so far is 11 and the album got to 14). This album explains why. It manages to combine the innovation of lo-fi indie rock brit-pop bands like Coldplay or Radiohead with the energy of grunge like Nirvana. And the result is stunning.

The whole album has an angsty feel, and there is serious passion in Matt's vocals, not least in the amazing opener, Sunburn. The lyrics are passionate and if pain could be turned into a song it would sound somewhere near Sunburn, with its heavy guitars, breaking vocals and hyptonising piano.

This is followed up by Muscle Museum, one of the best songs of recent times. The Latin-like guitar riff delicately opens it and the tune is really catchy, with a good bass line. It then breaks into another angsty chorus ('Can you see that I am needing/Begging for so much more that you could ever give/I don't want you to adore me/Don't want you to ignore me/Where it pleases you/I'll do it on my own'). This is the best songs on the album, its also fairly heavy.

Filip is the next. Its a weird track but I've grown to love it. It's chorus is beautifully dischordant and it seems to be speeding up incessantly until Matt whines 'to you' in the chorus.

Next is the first light track on the album, Falling Down, but its not a boring acoustic song, its got a ghostly feel to it. The falsetto is used superbly on this track.

Cave is another angsty rocker. It sounds really ghostly, and nearly descends into goth despite its falsetto as Matt screams 'Come into my cave and I'll burn your heart away' in the chorus. Its another memorable song.

Showbiz is also ghostly, as it begins with African drums and deep vocals, manifesting itself in a heavy chorus as Matt screams 'They make me dream your dreams/Make me scream your screams' but then the original vocal tune is played in a high octave shimmeringly on the guitar like one of those really slow metal songs.

Unintended is the second light tune, but is even more ghostly than Falling Down. The lyrics are superb and the falsetto is totally chilling. This is the first Muse track I heard and I thought they were all like this, but the album is much much harder.

Uno is next and was the band's debut single. It has superb lyrics ('This means nothing to me/ cos you are nothing to me/And it means nothing to me that you blew this away/Cos you could have been number one if you only found the time/And you could have ruled the whole world if you'd had the chance') and a painful chorus. Its the third Muse track I heard and, after Muscle Museum and Unintended, convinced me to buy the album.

Sober is similar to Filip, but with slightly less effect. However its still an excellent track. Escape starts off like Falling Down or Unintended and by the end is a bit harder. Its tune is very haunting. Overdue has a slightly electronic feel to it, but is still primarily rock and in basic tune is similar to Cave, for example.

The final track, Hate This And I'll Love You, is really heartbreaking, and a great album closer. It sounds similar to Showbiz.

I would NOT reccomend this CD if you only like happy music, but if you like good music, I would reccomend it. The best tracks are Muscle Museum, Uno, Sunburn, Cave and Unintended, but there are other excellent tracks too.
