Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - The Influence of the Gibbs Before They Were Famous
Clocking in with 31 remastered songs from 'down under', a dozen or more famous Australian artists from the early sixties display their cover versions of Gibb written songs. If you are not Australian, chances are you've never heard of Col Joye, Jimmie Little, Sandy Summers or Bip Addison. It doesn't matter. What does matter is that these very rare tracks have turned up, showing that even before the world heard of the Bee Gees, they were already making an impact on Australian music charts (albeit, they never had a hit themselves until the week they left for England!). The sound is typical of that era, but the maturity of most of the songs are amazing, given that the Gibbs were writing them as pre-teens/teenagers. The Bee Gees consider themselves songwriters first and this set proves that they were right on the money from the start.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A must for any true Bee Gees fan
This CD is an absolute must for any true collector of Bee Gees music. All the songs on this collection were written by the Bee Gees from 1963 to 1967 specifically for other artists. All were recorded by Australian artists Down Under where the Gibb brothers lived at the time. So this is truly an important collection of songs which unleashes the great writing talents of the brothers Gibb at such an early stage of their careers. While none of the songs here are performed by the Bee Gees themselves their magnificent harmonies can be heard on many of the songs as backing vocalists. In fact two of the outstanding tracks on the CD "And I'll Be Happy" and "House Without Windows" are performed by Trevor Gordon & The Bee Gees. The first track "(Underneath the) Starlight of Love" by Col Joye, a cult figure of sixties Australian music, is the first ever Bee Gees composition to be released by another artist. Other highlights for me include the country song "Walkin' Talkin' Teardrops" by Jimmie Little and up-tempo "Love and Money" by Bryan Davies. Jenny Bradley's "Who's Been Writing on the Wall" has a motown feel to it and could have easily been mistaken for a American soul artist of that era . The two Sandy Summer's tracks "A Girl Needs to Love" and "Messin' Round" are also standouts and feature the Bee Gees as background vocalists, proving that they sang with the ladies well before Sang, Streisand, Warwick and Dion. Don't expect to hear the slick production that we are so used to with any Bee Gees venture but instead appreciate the amazing talent that they possessed on the way to their first Australian No. 1 "Spicks and Specks". The CD booklet also contains some great history behind the songs and of the Bee Gees rise to stradom. This collection compliments the Bee Gees Australian collection "Brilliant From Birth" (also available through Amazon.com). As a Bee Gees fan this collection is priceless to me.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Early Bee Gees Gold
I have had the pleasure of owning this album for some time. It was released in Australia in 1998 and includes some very rare tracks, most being released on cd for the first time.

Keeping in mind that these tracks were recorded in the early to mid sixties, the sound and production quailty is right up there. The tracks were re-mastered and cleaned up for this recording so you really get the best of both worlds. It never ceases to amaze me just how mature the Bee Gees songs of this period were. It's really quite hard to imagine that they were just teenagers.

If you're a fan and wish to collect the Bee Gees in full, this is a must have album for your collection. Also keep an eye out for BRILLIANT FROM BIRTH (Festival D46066, 1998), a double cd containing 63 tracks from the same period, this time sung by the Bee Gees them selves.
