Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This set says it all!
If you are looking for a box set that emcompasses every form of music from the 70's this is it. From the disco era, to good old rock n' roll, this set will give you hours of entertainment.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Gotta Love Those 70s! Great Music! Great Set!
160 songs on 7 CDs!! Who could ask for more?! This Rhino set is outstanding! It'll take you back three decades in a heartbeat. IMHO, the 1970s produced more memorable songs than any other decade in music history. The '80s and '90s don't even come close. Thanks, Rhino, for a very comprehensive compilation.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Almost ALL of your favorite 70s pop songs
This Rhino release of 7 fully loaded (very nearly 80 minutes per) discs contains so many of the songs from that wonderfully soulful and, yet, silly decade - the 70s. There are many great 70s nuggets not included in this set, but as the great book included with the set explains, "Many of the songs couldn't be licensed for this release and you probably have them on other compilation CDs anyway." What IS included, however, are many forgotten gems which defined the "feel" or should I say "aura" of the 70s. "Popcorn" among them. Melanie's "Brand New Key" just makes you feel giddy. The set was carefully designed more as a look back at that wacky decade than as a mere 160 song collection. What makes this collection so very special is the 25 or so sound bites interspersed throughout the set. News clips which remind us of the times. Watergate. Patricia Hearst. The energy crisis, on and on. To top it all off the package comes with a cheesy carpet and plastic coating over the whole box. The kind of plastic which draped our family sofas so we wouldn't spill our Tang all over while jumping up and down on it. ....The soulful numbers such as "Midnight Train To Georgia", "Lean On Me", "Have You Seen Her" and "I'll Be Around" get down into your bones and make you want to be a better person. The funk of "Theme From Shaft", "Jungle Boogie" and "Brother Louie" among many make you want to groove and the rest of the set with it's various offerings of a slice of the 70s really bring you back. A few "novelty" songs are peppered in for good measure. Among my guilty favorites are "The Bertha Butt Boogie" and "Kung Fu Fighting". It's all here. Hard rock songs, pop ditties and way too many #1 hits to mention. ....

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Worth the price!
A really wonderful collection in a well-designed package! There are a few songs I would have left off, and a few missing (what, no Carpenters?), but all-in-all a terrific buy! I wish they would make one for the Sixties, Eighties and Nineties!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - A Lot Of Songs, A Lot Of Soundbites
I don't want to lay a bum trip on you all, but I have some major problems with this box set. First of all, Rhino, probably the best independent label to specialize in archive music restoration, had the best of intentions to tackle this compilation of the 1970's and dress it up to make the package as appealing as possible with the wonderful sound quality, the shag rug, the soundbites, and an admittedly cool booklet with the history of the recording artists, their songs, and their perspective along with various events in world history. But by using the soundbites in between the songs it disturbs the flow of the songs; it also makes repeated listening a chore to sit through. The soundbites (usually lasting for 30 seconds) lead to the second problem; to make room for them a number of songs (Ride Captain Ride, for example) had to be shortened in length. Is it asking too much to leave the songs alone and complete? We're paying a lot of money for the songs, NOT for the soundbites! And we also get the pleasure of listening to a ghastly Jim Jones soundbite telling his followers to "get your medicine" and "don't be afraid to die" with people weeping in the background. Someone sure is sick at Rhino to include that. And for those of you who have the 25 volume series of Have A Nice Day who also want this box set you're gonna get some repetition big time. 80+ songs. We're talking over half of this package. For those who don't have the Have A Nice Day series and who, like me, grew up in the '70's listening to AM radio, you're gonna have some major flashbacks listening to this. If you can tolerate the soundbites and don't mind the shortening of some songs (shades of Ktel!) you'll enjoy this package. Just keep that in mind and approach it from there. Have a nice day.
