Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A great set of 70's music!
This collection is the best I've found and a must-have for those who love all things retro-70's! Nearly all of the many songs contained were in the Top 10 and had a lot of radio play. The sound quality is good and there are sound bytes of historical clips scattered here and there. There is also a full-sized book explaining a bit of history behind each and every song, including when exactly it charted. Included are samples of all kinds of music that were popular back then, soul, rock, pop, bubble gum, some country, and a few of the instrumentals, too. It's worth the price because you'll be putting these CDs on again and again!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Best Thing I ever Bought
Wow! For someone who longs for the good old days of the 1970's, this boxed set covers the pop section best! I highly recommend it. You may want to augment this with some selections from progressive rock, but otherwise, as I said, WOW!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - "The Very Best Collection of it's Kind !
This is by far the finest collection of 70s hits ever put togeather(and I have heard many of them). For those of us that did things like left High School, went in the Service, worked our first full time (not just summer)job and got married all in the 70s, this collection can really take you back. After quiting school in 71 and working my first full time job at F.A.Davis and Sons, on 119 S. Howard St in Downtown Baltimore songs like "Want Add","Theme from Shaft" and "A Dog named Boo" take me right back to the old AM radio sitting there all day belting out these then new songs. The best thing about this set is that it is not filled with a lot of the Hard Rock garbage from that that time period but has a lot of Pop Hits also.
Folks that were born later will not know a lot of this stuff as for much of this music I have not heard these songs for 30+ years but hearing them again takes me right back to a time and place of my past. This set cost me about 80 bucks but it was worty every penny. I really enjoyed listening to my wife sing along with many of these tunes and telling me how much she had liked a certain song back then in her teen years.

This set is about the best collection out today and if the 1970s was the time that molded you for the rest of your life this collection will be a treasured addition to your music library!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - SEPARATELY?
Is there anyway you can buy the discs separately than just in the box set? I still have the box set but someone stole 2 of the discs and I really hate that it's incomplete and really don't want to buy the whole thing again!

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Padded With 70s Filler
This box could have been a great way to take the best selections from the 20+ Have a Nice Day CDs, and offer it in a 7-CD budget package. We could only hope to be able to get all those shlocky one-hit wonders from the 70s in one convenient box set. Instead, they padded it with alot of C-grade 70s hits, and left out at least a dozen of the best songs from the 25-volume series, making this box nothing more than an okay sampler.

For example, they left out "I Think I Love You" by the Partridge Family which was on Volume 3 of the HAND series. The box set book makes note of the song so I'd think that it would be included. Some other HAND tracks that should have been included: "Amie", "Magnet and Steel", "Undercover Angel", "Moonlight Feels Right", "My Sharona", "Midnight Cowboy", "Tubular Bells", "Let Her In", "Gold", "Smoke From A Distant Fire", "Painted Ladies", "I'd Love To Change The World", "Star", "Here Comes The Sun", and "Overture From Tommy".

And when you look at Rhino's Billboard Top Hits series, you know they could have included songs like "Heart Of Glass", "I'm In You", and "Escape (Pina Colada)". The box set's disc 7 was particularly weak, and the late 70s were represented very poorly. The awkward conglomeration of stadium rock and second-rate disco would please few people. Most rockers would buy the band's albums (this was from the album rock era!) making those tracks unnecessary.

When you read the fine print on a HAND volume, you will notice that they took the songs from most of the major labels, and licensing wasn't much of an issue. Some major 70s hits like "Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves", "Time In A Bottle", "More Than A Feeling", "Jammin'", and "On and On" probably could have been included though the price of the box may have been raised.

Songs such as "Bertha B--t Boogie" could have been omitted to make room. Some of the most superficial songs on the box, in my opinion, are: "Give Me Just A Little More Time", "Treat Her Like A Lady", "I'll Take You There", "Everbody Plays The Fool", "Brandy You're A Fine Girl", "Nice To Be With You", "Morning After", "That Lady, Pt. 1", "Midnight Train To Georgia"(too many songs about choochoo trains and Georgia at the beginning of Disc 4!), "Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia", "Streak", "Do It", "Beach Baby", "Love Machine, Pt.1", "Making Our Dreams Come True", and "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now". "Feelings" was appropriately included as I wouldn't want to buy it separately, but it's an essential 70s shlock hit!

While it was good to include some 70s superstars' hits, the song selection was inferior: "Happy Anniversary" (should be "Reminiscing"), "Evil Woman" (should be "Don't Bring Me Down"), "You're No Good" (should be "Blue Bayou" or that other hit), "Do You Feel Like We Do" (should be "I'm In You"). Also, "Fly Like An Eagle" shouldn't have the keyboard intro edited out. The intro was always included on radio airplay during the 70s.

2008 edit: This box set does have some good 70s R&B songs that aren't already on any of the Have a Nice Day volumes by Rhino, but most all of the songs on this box set were already released on the HAND volumes. What they should have done is released an additional HAND volume with these songs such as "Theme from Superfly" by Curtis Mayfield and "Tell Me Something Good" by Rufus on a single CD, saving about $70 for the people who already paid up to $250 for the 25-volume HAND series.
