Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Fun Trip Down Memory Lane!
If you're a child of the 70s ( "baby-boomer?") and look to the music of the era for great memories, this lovingly compiled and annotated box set from Rhino is exactly what you've been waiting for. Obviously, they couldn't include EVERYTHING and although licensing rights have resulted in many notable exclusions, what we have here is a pretty fair sampling of what Top-40 and AM radio had to offer during the period. Everything's here....classic pop-rock hits, bubblegum, disco, kitschy novelty songs, one-hit wonders, a liberal sprinkling of cheese-balls...come on, you know you loved them! An entertaining historical overview of a more innocent time, when music was fun with a capital F! A must for deejays and plain old music fans everywhere.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Relive the 70's!
My teenage and young adult years were in the 1970's, so this boxed set of 70's music on CD calls to mind many memories with the music that was going on in my life during so many of those magical moments. Sure, there's a lot of kitsch here, but some of the most memorable songs of this decade were not always the good ones. Leaving the bad songs out would be something akin to having only a selective recall of the times. Songs like "Afternoon Delight", "Having My Baby", and "Disco Duck" still receive a fair share of notoriety to this day. No other decade of the 20th Century had so much musical activity, both good and bad.

Despite the obvious schlock, there are still a number of good pop songs from the decade in this collection. "Signs" by the Five Man Electrical Band, the Theme from "Shaft" by Isaac Hayes, and the Main Ingredient's "Everybody Plays the Fool" are just a few examples of the fairly well-balanced collection of pop, rock, and R & B songs that appear in this set. Many of the tunes are interspersed with audio snippets from political and cultural events of the decade, such as Richard Nixon's famous "I am not a crook" speech. They make reliving the 70's an even more poignant experience.

My wife and I both enjoy this set because of the memories it brings back, and we enjoy listening it on the CD player in our car (not a "Chevy Van")on long trips. If you can't afford the somewhat high cost of the boxed set, the majority of the tracks in the set are also available separately on Rhino's "Have a Nice Day" collection, now up to 23 volumes. Any way you buy this collection of songs, it's still a stone groove, man!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - WOW! What a bunch of good stuff.
Rhino Records has put on CD's a ton of music which would never be found elsewhere. Much of it is found on this pricey but worthwhile box set. Lots of these tunes are very good, reminding those of us old enough to recall a time now between twenty and thirty years ago. The value of this set is found in finding here obscure songs which have somehow not made it onto discs otherwise. It is easy to pick two or three really great songs from each and another five or six worth hearing. It may be one of a few places to find "Joy" or "Green Eyed Lady", the Delfonics, Sugarloaf and a ton of one, two or three hit wonders.

Gotta take the bitter with the sweet, though, so we find "The Night Chicago Died", "Chevy Van", "Convoy" and more than a handful of truly forgettable songs. Ditto forgettable artists like Daddy Dew Drop, Rick Dees and Terry Jacks. However, we cannot judge this too harshly, though; after all, it was a whole decade!

There are about fifteen discs that Rhino has put in the "Have a Nice Day" series. They should have released all of them in one set. Failing that, there ought to be a second Volume covering the rest. It, too will be worth buying.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great memories!
Being born in 69, this box set brought back a lot of memories. I grew up listening to these songs playing on the radio and records of my older brothers and sister. By far THE best compilation of 70s hits. Buy this one and you will not need another. Expensive, but well worth the price!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Awesome collection
I discovered this box set while wandering through Amazon. I'm really glad I bought it -- it may have been the most expensive box set I have ever bought, but it is so comprehensive and has so many great tracks that it is worth every penny. I was born in 1974, so listening to this music isn't really a 70's nostalgia trip for me, but over the years I have heard and enjoyed nearly every one of these songs on the radio. And a few were tracks I'd never heard but which are extremely cool ("Popcorn" and "Jackie Blue" come to mind). The packaging is top-notch too -- a great book comes with it with info on each track. And the shag carpet on the cover adds just the right cheesy touch. BUY THIS -- it is excellent. Maybe someday Rhino will give the 1980's a comparable treatment. I'd buy that in a minute.
