Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - What's great stays great, decade after decade
These songs knocked everyone off their feet when they debuted at what seemed to be the end of the Bossa Nova craze --in the cool-post-Beatnik 60's cocktail era. But actually, in Brazil, the Bossa Nova fever never did quite cool off and in '72, when I was visiting family there, this album was still trotted out proudly at every gathering.

Not only is this album a great party CD for "retro" parties, relaxed evenings or just sitting at home and relaxing, but it introduces you to the greats of Brazilian music. Oh, there is a whole lot more great Brazilian music than just this, but this album is surely the place to start. (By the way, if you have insomnia, this can be quite soothing. Lie back on that imaginary beach in Rio and float away on Gilberto's soft voice. Mmmmmmm....)

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - atmospheric, lovely music
There is not much to say about this album that has not been said here by others. I will limit myself to endorsing "Getz/Gilberto" as a very pleasurable, if not earth-shatteringly important album.

First of all, I am amazed at its clear, atmospherically recorded sound. This disc is top of the line when it comes to sound.

As for the songs themselves--"The Girl From Ipanema" has become a standard. The other songs all showcase the genius of Getz and the marvelous playing of Gilberto. This is truly lovely music that exemplifies all that is best about the Bossa Nova style. One song in particular desrves more notice:

"Corcovado" is a gem that doesn't have half the fame of "The Girl From Ipanema." Yet, I would rank it right up there as one of the two great tunes on the disc. There is something about the almost introspective joy of this song that makes it music that is truly worthwhile.

I recommend this disc to anyone who likes lovely music. It may not change the world, but it is certainly nice to listen to every now and then.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - REMASTERING HAS FLAWS....
I love this album, but when the recording studios decided to do a remastering of the original, I went out to purchase it. WHAT A DUD!!! The only songs worth listening to are "Girl from Ipanema", "So Danco Samba", and "Desafinado". LOTS OF HISS NOISES AND OTHER NASTY STUFF. Not worth the purchase for this one. I hope they decide to do another remastering.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A Must Have Jazz Album
I must take exception to the reviewer who said that the cd had problems when played on older cd players. I have an old Sony player from about 1986, and it plays just fine on it. His other reviews also complained about the quality of other recordings, so I must wonder if the problem isn't in his stereo equipment.
But back to the cd. I found the original album in a stack of old records my father had, put it on the turntable, and immediatly fell in love with it. About a week later, I was shopping for CD's in a store when the cd caught my eye. I almost jumped into the bin to grab it. This is without a doubt one of the best jazz albums ever. The music is haunting, and will get into your blood. I had thought Charlie Parker was the best jazz saxophone player, but after hearing this album, I would have to put Getz into the running right along with him. If you enjoy listening to jazz music, you will not be disappointed in this cd. Even the liner notes are well done, and have additional material along with the notes that came with the LP. The bonus tracks also add to the quality of this cd. You will get your money's worth! Not to mention the romantic effects of the music...

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Disarmingly (and alarmingly) cool
Yes, yes, yes. This record will get you laid, Shallow Hal. And for the not so shallow among you, this will not only lay you, it will make you levitate. Why? Cause this is bossa nova, this is muito natural. So there, invest in yourself and get this album.
