- You gotta believe in the Right Reverend!
If you like real soul music and an entertainer who is real with his emotions and not some fake show man, buy this CD. For me, it brought back big time memories of what I was doin' (and who I was doin') when each of these songs hit the air waves. The Memphis horns are spectacular. Willie Mitchell is truly on of the most unrated producers, arrangers, and composers of our time. Every cut on this CD is a 5 star cut. Al green is a 5 star performer. His vocals are deep rich chocolate that can melt anyone. You can tell he pours his heart into "Belle" and his use of horns is amazing. If you listen to D'angelo's Voodoo you can see where he got his influence. Al Green's Greatest Hits are a must have in any hard-core R&B collection.

...I've had this for many years and in many incarnations, distributed by different labels and I've gotta tellya. First, any Al Green CD/vinyl/tape is gonna have fabuloso music on it. Second, sometimes in trying to get a 'popular' sequencing of tunes, record companies make a faux pas...the faux pas here was in removing Al's version of the Bee Gee's "How Do You Mend A Broken Heart" from the original sequencing. And for those recent Al Green converts that is truly a disservice. You just have to find it on another Al Green CD; to me, it's inclusion on the original packaging made a primo product that much more superb... Plus, one of my earlier CDs of this has the extended "Let's Stay Together" which to me allows the listener to get 'caught up' in the music like Al evidently was during the recording. My last two cents: The most underrated cut on this CD has gotta be the Whitfield/Strong song "I Can't Get Next to You", which gets a bumpin' gospel blues turnout/makeover with assistance from those great Memphis/Nashville sessionmen. It's so nice that I keep track 8 in replay mode til I fill my jones...

Without doubt, Al Green is the greatest living soul singer. Issac Hayes is fab, but Reverend Al is superb. If you can't come to Memphis and go to the Full Gospel Tabernacle, listen to this album and you will get the essence of the Memphis soul sound.

Listening to tracks like "Still In Love With You" and "Love & Happiness" take me back to those hot summer days in the 70's, smellin' the barbeque goin', and chasin' my cousins around the yard, and seein' the old folks play spades...all very pleasant memories. These tracks are just a few of the reasons why R&B will never die.
