Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Dopeness
This is probably one of the Beastie Boys' most well-known albums. It's not their greatest, but it's excellent and provides some of the Beasties' best moments. Ill Communication doesn't really depart from its predecesor Check Your Head. Rather, it continues the direction the Boys were going with Check Your Head. However, Ill still sounds different from ...Head. It's a little more sample-based, features fewer instrumental tracks, and is a little less lo-fi so to speak. "Sure Shot" is a classic, "Sabatoge" is as energetic as it was back then, and "Get It Together" features Q-Tip when ATCQ was still alive and well. The instrumental tracks such as "Ricky's Theme" and "Sabrosa" are also very good. The one problem with the album is that there's a little too much distortion on some the Boys' vocals on some of the vocal tracks. But otherwise, Ill Communication is practically flawless. If you're a fan or even if you're not a fan, get this album. Just don't expect an album of "Sabatoge"'s like some people did back then.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Sabotage
Most everyone has heard Sabotage and for me thats reason enough to pick this cd up. But, as always with the Beastie Boys, there are many other songs that give this album merit. One of my favorites is root down. Very cool.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of my favorite Beastie Boys albums
Killer album with great jazz samples! Probably one of my favorites just because of the samples and beats, and it stays away from the sillier and cheesy elements of their earlier albums.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The sickest albumn of all time
This is one of the two perfect albumns ever made. Lyrically, the Beastie Boys have surpassed everyone and I defy anyone else to put the word cuhootness in a song and make it work. I have listened to this CD countless times and I still hear something new everytime. This albumn contains layered complexity. The beats are never wack but like all great things, it might take a few listenings before the genius begins to sink in.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - I'm Tellin' All Y'all...
There's nothing like a road trip for getting a groove on with some tunes. This particular CD I hadn't given a good listen to in quite a while (partly because it was an ex's favorite), but it met several criteria of long-distance driving: it was upbeat, loud, and long-playing (lots of tracks, not just some paltry 10-track CD.)

And I had forgotten how good it was! Of course, there are the hits, like "Sabotage", "Sure Shot", and "Root Down," but then there are all these incidental instrumentals, all funked and souled out mixed with a strong drum beat. Also there's a couple of songs with, I kid you not, a flute sample. Never since Jethro Tull has there been a better use of a rock/jazz/funk flute; actually, I think the Boys used it with more musical appeal.

Also, there was a line of consistency with a certain drumbeat, like the one you'll hear on "Sabotage." That particular thrum-thrum weaves its way through the CD, and on one of the tracks, someone gets crazy on the violin, all the while that thrum-thrum keeps beating steadily.

Towards the end of the album, there's this creepy, Gregorian chant sounding song that freaked my stuff out. I had forgotten about that song, and it was completely different from anything else on the album. It just goes to show that the Beastie Boys know how to make the most of any kind of musical style. Of course, the rhymes are tight, as always, but there's a lot more here that's worth merit.
