Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - His masterpiece
I've been an Oldfield fan since my early teens, and in his music I have discovered many seminal moments. Ommadawn is awesome, and he performed that aged 22. The last movement of Crises is a visceral onslaught, with the tour-de-force Simon Phillips in harmony on the drums. There have been glimpses of brilliance throughout the years, and, let's face it, plenty of disappointments, yet in The Songs of Distant Earth Mike Oldfield produced his masterpiece. So many reviews here say it all: this one carries you away, and the whole Universe is open to you. It really is a unique piece, and good enough to be described as close to perfection, wave after wave of luscious composition, layer upon layer of floating synth, lilting guitar, and then that crescendo guitar atop Track 16, Ascension. No-one makes the guitar wail like Mike - the musical equivalent of a great orgasm leading to the beginnings of life, and in outer-space. Yes, the man got this one so bang-on right. Beautiful.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A lovely album
There's an optimism to Mike Oldfield's music that is not for everybody. I can understand that some people would find it cloying. But I'm not one of them. I admire artists who are hopeful and melodic. The icing on the cake is the inclusion of Frank Borman's reading of Genesis from lunar orbit. This is a wonderful album, I never tire of hearing it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Mental massage
I must admit that, when I first heard this album, I was put off by the fact that it sounded so unlike any of Mike Oldfield's other works. However, since then it has become a clear favourite. The pieces are beautifully put together, and take the listener on a journey across time and space, which is fitting when one bears in mind the purpose for which the album was written. If ever I need to relax, in need of a mental massage, then this is the remedy that works every time!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - One of Humanity's finest musicians
Since I've been an ardent fan of this man's music since I first heard Tubular Bells in the mid eighties, I will never be able to provide an unbiased viewpoint- I am that much of a fan. With that being said, I found this piece of music exceptional. There have been some works by Oldfield that do not strike the chords others do, and there has yet to be something akin to the imaginative work of, say, Incantations or Hergest Ridge. Since our prayers to see those works matched in brilliance with anything since them have been unanswered all these years, we have to admit that all the work of Mike Oldfield is fitting of the man at the controls. I've seen harsh criticism of some of the works, but I have yet to hear the man produce music that doesn't place him among the greatest of all musicians in human history. 'Distant Earth' is really one of the better peices by Mr. Oldfield over the past twenty years or so, although I have yet to hear one I do not love. However, I had to let TBIII grow on me for a while. In short, if one appreciates the finest of today's ambitious music, then you will find this piece a treasure among your collection.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - I love it!
I am a audiophile and big fan of electronic and instrumental music. This album from Mike Oldfield is simply out of this world! It hits all the right buttons. I am listening this album as I'm writing this review using my highend headphone -- STAX SR-007 Omega II, and I am completely emerged in the music.

I only listened to all the samples of all other Oldfield's albums and this one really touched me.

Highly recommended.
