Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Harvest
In spite of it's four-star rating, I'd more give it 3.5 stars if I could. To be honest, I've never been quite sure where I've stood with Harvest. On the one hand, we get some very good songs, such as
Old Man, Needle & the Damage Done and Alabama (Heart of Gold isn't on the list - I'll get to that in a minute). On the other hand, some tracks are weak, and it can't be taken as seriously as After the Goldrush or Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. That, and it's a bit too country-ish for me. For a song-by-song breakdown, here we go...
1. Out on the Weekend: 5/10. One of the weakest tracks in Neil's history, a sappy, countrified throwaway. Not the best possible way to open an album.
2. Harvest: 7.5/10. Decent title track, but Neil's done many better ones.
3. A Man Needs a Maid: 7.5/10. Awful lyrics, but great arrangement. Even then, it's a bit too dramatic for it's own good.
4. Heart of Gold: 7/10. You don't know how disappointed I was when I learned Neil's lone #1 hit was a slick, sappy, country-pop hybrid with groan-inducing lyrics to boot. The acoustic guitar riff and harmonies save the song worthwhile. Still, if you want a "real" Neil Young classic from the era you'd be better-suited with Down By the River or Southern Man. Most of Neil's fans love it, but there you go.
5. Are You Ready for the Country: 6/10. The phrase "Generic and forgettable, but good fun and inoffensive" fits this one quite well.
6. Old Man: 10/10. Now here's where this album really picks up. Nice banjo part (never thought I'd say that!) and fine lyrics.
7. There's a World: 5.5/10. Weakest song on the album behind Out on the Weekend, an overblown mess that for some reason included the London Symphony Orchestra. But even without them, it's a fairly forgettable tune.
8. Alabama: 10/10. Neil rages against Southern racism. Not quite outhern Man (hey, what is?) but the message is good, and it gets points for being the album's only rocker.
9. Needle & the Damage Done: 10/10. Recorded live, stripped down to just Neil with his acoustic guitar in all of two minutes and change. This tale of drug abuse never fails to send chills down my spine. Undoubtably the best song on Harvest, and an undisputed classic.
10. Words (Between the Lines of Age): 6/10. Starts off with a cool guitar riff, but quickly turns dull. Nice riff, though.
OVERALL...7.45/10. It's Neil's most overrated record, no doubt, but has it's moments and is good listening. But After the Gold Rush, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and Rust Never Sleeps are better picks.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Neil Young is incredible and remains so after all these years.
I haven't heard Prairie Wind, although I am looking forward to doing so, and I haven't listened to Neil Young in a long time to be honest, but listening to this tonight took me back to my youth, the period of my life from about age 16 to about 26. I remember being in the Student Union with my friends at university and playing Neil Young, Buffalo Springfield on the jukebox..I specifically remember playing Cinnamon Girl ..which I loved..it was a magical time as I was caught up in the excitement of young adulthood..his comments about drugs were very real (The Needle and the Damage Done) since the drug culture was alive and well during that time..I remember loving "Comes a Time", "Old Man", "The Needle and the Damage Done"..and so many more. His music, whether the hard-grinding rock or the romantic, gentle folk music (I love Harvest Moon), has always spoken to me. I remember sharing beautiful moments and parties with friends with Neil Young in the background. He was a permanent part of the post-Woodstock and post-Vietnam culture at my university...Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young, Van Morrison ("Brown Eyed Girl") and Jimi Hendrix dominated the jukeboxes and the music scene..it was all very post-Vietnam..very politically-charged...It's true that his voice isn't that great, but what makes a great artist? As an instrumentalist he is fantastic, and I think sincerity is crucial...his vocals and lyrics are so sincere that you feel that he's sitting next to you performing for you in your living room...he connects with his audience.. Another key to being a great artist is having something to say, and he has always had something to say, hasn't he? About drugs, politics, love and loss..finding your way in life...his songs make you think and make you feel...I think that's more important than having a great voice..what's the point of having a great voice if you're not sincere and you have nothing to say? It's like a person who's beautiful on the exterior, but radiates little or no beauty from within...empty...Besides, his voice is very unique and especially lovely on "Harvest" and "Comes a Time". He's never been afraid to say what he thinks nor to explore new genres, popular or not..he's always resisted falling into a category, and I admire him for this stubborn versatility and originality..he has a strong personality and more than his share of dignity and integrity..his heart and soul are definitely in his music, and I admire him so much and am grateful that he has accompanied me into middle age...from 1970 until today!! This is one of his best albums!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - It Never Gets Old
This CD is good from start to finish. I have been listening to it since 1975 (of course it was an album back then). The music style is unplugged and folksy and the lyrics are excellent -- you can relate to them. Most of the tunes are quite catchy. I can't wait to listen to "Prairie Wind" for the first time (it's getting excellent reviews from the experts), but until then, I'm quite happy with "Harvest Moon."

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - "YOU GOT TO TELL YOUR STORY BOY, BEFORE ITS TIME TO GO"
I had this record via my mom for years before I ever touched it. When I was thirteen there was no way in hell I was listening to an album that had James Taylor and Linda Rondstat on it. STILL probably wouldn't, although maybe have more of an open mind thanks to this record.
I didn't know NEIL YOUNG, I figured if James and Linda sucked, than Neil must suck too, then fate took me to a concert in '96, after aquiring a ticket. I was amazed at how cool this guy was. He rocked so much! I remember coming home that night a rifeling through my records to find this. I put it on my second hand turntable and laid back. In the dark of the room I grooved to this. The first Neil Young album I ever listened to.
Sure, it didn't rock as much as the concert had (this album is basically all acoustic- I didn't know about Crazy Horse yet, which is who he was with that night) but my tastes were about to change. OLD MAN and NEEDLE AND THE DAMAGE DONE never had to grow on me, I dug em right away. HEART OF GOLD and READY FOR THE COUNTRY soon followed, The rest took a little more time to FULLY appreciate but was one of my favorite "bedtime" albums throughout my teens. Now I listen to the words in a whole different light. Being a parent at twenty two and scratching between whats right and whats wrong, I like to just play it really LOUD!
At thirteen I had already obsessively collected everything AEROSMITH, PINK FLOYD and ZEPPELIN... After this night I was ready to go to work on NEIL YOUNG.
