One of the great recordings from the 60's and one of Van Morrison's best. Nevertheless I have a big gripe with the quality of the sound and packaging. When is Warner Brothers going to remaster this recording as it (and all Van Morrison's Warner recordings) should be? The CD you purchase in 2004(!) is from a remastering done in the mid 80's -- at the dawn of the CD age. This and other Van Morrison recordings deserve the full treatment, with, at minimum, new remastering (and if possible extra tracks).
It took the record companies nearly 20 years (2003) to give the Rolling Stones' original albums the remastering they deserve (SACD). It has still not been done with the Beatles original albums which likewise were originally remastered in the early-mid 80's and sound terrible!!
There are in fact many original albums from the 50's, 60's and 70's being sold today on CD that were originally remastered back in the 80's with heavily compressed, flat sound quality. To me that is a rip-off considering the price we are forced to pay for CD's (often more than a DVD)!!!

This is the perfect album to lisen to if you yust whant to relax and feel good. put it on and lay yourself on your bed close your eyes and yust float away in to a dream land, it works for me and I am shure it will work for anybody, a true beautiful masterpiece.

Rating: - One of the Best of All Time
I bought this album as a college freshman when it came out in 1968. I had liked Brown-Eyed Girl, but this wasn't anything like that song. I sorta liked it after the first listening, even though it wasn't what I expected. After two or three listenings, I began to appreciate the intracacies of the individual songs and the genius of Van Morrison. Astral Weeks soon became my favorite album, and I've probably played it 50-100 times a year ever since. Whatever mood I'm in, this album is appropriate. Even though I never knew a good many of the words until the last few years (God bless the internet), the music is simply the most emotionally evocative that has ever been created. The jazz guitar interplays, the ever-present bass backbone, and Morrison's voice are an incredible force of musical nature that cannot be taken lightly. The songs are individual vignettes and very well constructed, but this is not an album with catchy hooks. This is an experience to be savored as an entire creation.
You can't possibly find better music than this, and Van was in his early 20's when he made this album. This is what it must have been like to hear Mozart or Beethoven. This is not like a lot of what he has done since, probably Veedon Fleece comes closest. In any case, buy this album, and play it all the time. Then play it some more.

My only caveat, if you don't appreciate Van Morrison in general you probably won't appreciate this masterpiece.
