Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - My favorite album EVER!
Words cannot describe how amazing this album is. It is complex and sublime and reveals new things with each listen. Everyone should have this record. For me, this is the most inspiring thing I've ever heard and it still gives me goosebumps when I hear it.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Tongue Tied
I have gone thirty years of living without having heard Astral Weeks. It took me one day of listening to it over and over to be "changed forever." Every reviewer of this album will always come to the same conclusion, you just can't describe to someone how or why this music is so incredible. Breaking the pieces of the songs down-vocals, lyrics, instrumentals-none of these things are outstanding if taken on their own. But together, it truly is something magical. I couldn't tell you really what the lyrics are trying to say. You can't say that Van has a beautiful voice. The pure passion and soul with which he sings blows away any need for clean pitch or tones. All you know is, whatever he is singing, he really, really means it.

Anyone who loves music, not some machine made bass beat, but music, must have this album. MUST. If music makes you feel, touches or moves you, you must have this. Put it in your CD player and keep it there.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Hating life? Here's a recipe for a remedy:
Y'know, I could spend my limit of 1,000 words writing about each individual song on "Astral Weeks," or writing about Morrison's voice or his beautiful, bizarre lyrics or the "love to love" scat on "Madame George" or Richard Davis' bass-work, or Warren Smith's vibes, and never come close to expressing how great they all are or how much I love them.

So here's my much more economic review: if you don't have this album, get it because you're going to like it. It doesn't matter who you are or where you live, this record is a thing of goodness. Get it. Eventually -- maybe sooner, maybe later -- it'll blow you away.

Get this album and play it. Play it on your back porch or in a dark room on headphones or while driving through the middle of nowhere or while coming home from work on the train or where ever. It will change your life and it will make you happier than you were before. What else could you want from music?

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Concrete Romanticism
'Astral Weeks' is certainly renowned for its pastoral elegance. Even the album cover has Van wistfully serene against a background of country foilage. Although this hardly seems the appropriate image for a young man brought up in working-class East Belfast and educated by years of explosive gigging in hard-nosed blues bands. Indeed much of the lyrical content of 'Astral Weeks' evolves in a purely urban setting as Van reminices about his childhood. The streets of Belfast are evoked in a wonderful miasma of half-remembered glances (there are also brief mentions of Dublin and London).

Van's simple melodies give him huge scope to improvise his vocals. Indeed it's his voice which is the most essential musical element on the album. The rest of the musicians seem to be tip-toeing around his extraordinary personal longings, jumping in with nervous excitement between his vocal phrasings before scuttling back behind him again as he takes the mic. Indeed it's as if Van is not even aware of the other musicians so intent is he on expressing his emotional landscape as purely as possible.

Richard Davis's bass is the most obvious example of the power these session musicians give to the album. His arm-breaking attempts to match the spontaniety of Van's vocals give 'Astral Weeks' a euphoric intensity that's difficult to ignore.

By the end of the album 'Slim Slow Slider' harnesses a tighter musical structure with Van given less room to stretch and as a consequence the track almost sounds like him talking in comparison with the rest of the album.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - When Music Trancends Expression
This is, without a doubt, one of those most beautiful complete works I have ever listened to, watched, read, saw ,or heard. Van Morrison created an album of such great hope and inspiring wonder I have tears in my eyes just thinking about it. There are few works in music that can move me to that kind of emotion: Grace, A Love Supreme, and this Astral Weeks. If you love good music (if you are reading this you probably do) then you must fork out the...$10 to buy this. It is different. It is sublime. It is a complete masterpiece.
