- It's like butter.
Even until today, alot of Mariahs albums are half good, half not. She always packs alot of decent songs among the few big hits from an album. Not so with "Butterfly". Not only do we get the new sexier Mariah here, but we get an album that's pretty much filler-free. "Honey" is as irresistable today as it was in 1997. "Butterfly" and "My All" are both wonderful and lyrically deep. I love "Fourth Of July", and I really love "Breakdown". Both are so good. Mariah also drops the expected cover, but this one is tops, and "The Beautiful Ones" truly is beautiful. The "Rainbow" album is similar to this, and I like it as well, but there's just no beating the music here, and of course Mariahs cover shot.

- mariah's best record ever
I've owned this album since it came out. At first I wasn't sure it would be as excellent as Daydream, but it was even better. Mariah had finally experimented more with r&b and hip hop, but kept her classic original signature sound too. The melodies are enchanting and the music is a timeless classic and very soothing. This is the album that can truly appeal to a young audience as well as entertain the older folks, the music on this CD is universal. This CD, mary j blige's share my world and janet's velvet rope are the best CD's of 1997.

Mariah sure does shine when it comes to her singles hitting #1 on the billboard charts. MY All and Honey where her #1 hits from the album but are not the only good songs from the album. For example "Butterfly" I love this song... Same with "Breakdown", "Fly Away(Butterfly Reprise)" and "Close My Eyes" Of course "My All" and "Honey" are great Mariah songs but so are some others on the album not saying all them but the ones I mentioned sure will do it.

''Butterfly'' was released in 1997 and was then regarded as a huge career step for Mariah Carey. Through ''Butterfly'' she dabbled in hip-hop and R&B and generally become racier and promoted a sexy image. However, her trademark ballads are more than present in ''Butterfly''- they comprise 3/4 of it.
I am listening to ''Butterfly'' right now. Here is a track-by-track review.
1.''Honey'' : The song that changed Mariah's image, career and even fan base. This song - and especially its video - came as a surprise to most people. ''Honey'' has some racy lyrics and the beat is playful and lively - standing in stark contrast to Mariah's previous hits (Vision of Love, Love takes time, I don't wanna cry, Hero, One sweet day etc.)However, Mariah's vocals are fabulous(although she sounds strained at times) and Sean Combs' samples make the song shine. "Honey" debuted at #1 on The Billboard Hot 100 and stayed at #1 for 3 weeks. 10/10
2.''Butterfly'' : An amazing ballad. This song is often criticised for its ''lack of depth''. However, if you listen carefully,you can feel Mariah's pain while singing it. This song is probably-if not definitely-dedicated to her ex-husband,Tommy Mottola, who is said to have kept Mariah ''as a prisoner'' when they were married. Towards the end of the song Mariah uses her ''all'' and gives a powerful performance. Mesmerizing. It makes me weep at times. One of her best songs EVER. The song did not chart on Billboard charts because it was not issued a commercial single in the US (it did peak at #16 on the airplay charts though). 10/10
3.''My All'' : This song is another ballad. It is beautiful. Its focal point is its chorus. The first one is soft but the second one is strong and Mariah sings her heart out there. However, after 02:24 of the song(after the second chorus), I do not like the song. It becomes repetitive and Mariah's vocals are not THAT good. However, the last two lines are delivered wonderfully. "My All" was Mariah's 13th #1 single on The Billboard Hot 100 in 1998. 9,5/10
4.''The roof''' : Wow.Probably the best song in the album. A lot of people claim this is Mariah's best song EVER,and I guess I have to agree with them. The choruses are amazing,and the verses too. But what shines here is the bridge. It is exceptional,outstanding,mind-blowing...I love it, especially the first two verses:''Last night I dreamed that I/
Whispered the words I love you...''. ''The roof'' may at first sound weird but it will definitely grow on you. Mariah wrote the lyrics herself. They are amazing and succeed in putting across the lust,desperation and the splendor a person feels when looking back on a moment of liberation. 10/10
5.''Fourth of July'': This ballad is truly amazing. I loved ''Underneath the stars'' on Daydream, so I also adored ''Fourth of July'', as both songs are similar. What stands out here is the music-splendid and utterly romantic! Also, Mariah's vocals are better than ever.10/10
6.''Breakdown'' : This song is good! The rhyth is catchy,the lyrics well-crafted and Mariah's vocals in accordance with the song! The rap is placed in the right place and what makes this song interesting is the fact that the lyrics are aimed indirectly to Tommy Mottola and describe Mariah's state after her divorce. ''Breakdown'' received an amount of radio play on the Hot 100 Airplay chart (#53)10/10
7.''Babydoll'': The intro of this song is fantastic. The lyrics are good and Mariah's vocals are very nice too. This song was co-written by Missy Eliott and is so good. 10/10
8.''Close my eyes'':This ballad is beautiful. The music is so nice and the choruses are AMAZING. Mariah gives a soft performance, which makes the song so likeable and easy going, but all the while one can gain some insight into Mariah's walk of life. Simply outstanding. 10/10
9.''Whenever you call'':This song is another ballad. At first, I didn't quite like it, but then it grew on me. The chorus is very emotional and the lyrics talk about supporting a loved one. A beautiful song. At first,however, Mariah's vocals do not make ''Whenever you call''justice. From 01:56 Mariah uses right vocals, perfect ones. 10/10
10.''Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)'':I absolutely adore this song.I believe that this song is one of the best in ''Butterfly'',along with ''The Roof'' and maybe ''Butterfly''. What I like here is...everything. Vocals,lyrics,music, everything is up to scratch. Outstanding. 10/10
11.''The Beautiful Ones'': I do not like it. I think it is Mariah's worst cover. I like it at the end though where Mariah soars. 3/10
12.''Outside'':This song perfectly portrays Mariah's background. According to the lyrics,she can't pinpoint what she is, as she is ''neither here nor there''. The bridge and the choruses are amazing. ''Outside'' is the perfect song that closes a perfect record. 10/10
Overall, Butterfly is a wondeful record. It showcases Mariah's state of mind at the moment and her vocals. Well done, Mimi! Truly amazing.

I enjoyed this album. But I don't get all the people saying that it is her best. "Honey" cannot even be put in the same sentence as the amazing "Fantasy", the title track is a bizarre ballad with an equally bizarre video, "My All" is probably the best song on the album. "Close My Eyes" is a good inspirational song, but I prefer Rainbow's "Petals". "The beautiful Ones" is a noteworthy cover but not ideally suited to Mariah, while "Outside" gets my vote as Mariah's worst-ever ballad.
This is a pretty good album. But I prefer both "Daydream" and "Rainbow".
