- a great debut from that wacky fiona girl :)
this is a very beatuiful & underated album right here from that wacky fiona apple girl. sadly fiona had to go thru what alot of young talented music makers have to go thru. i.e. being throw into the spotlight and hyped to the moon. this can hurt an artist no doubt (and i see it happen all the time). fiona is cool thou. and the singles and videos on here were a great change of pace from what was getting heavy mtv play at the time. it's a great piece of music from start to finish. she has an amazing voice!!! and lets face it she's a nutcase and that's always cool :) people with problems seem to make the best music but sadly they also seem to get burned :(

Fiona Apple is, without a doubt, the best solo singer I have ever heard. I admit, I didn't like her at first, but that was in 1997 when I was a naive third grader who only cared about the Spice Girls. I wasn't in touch with real music back then, but believe me, I am now.
I actually bought her second CD first. I really loved the song "Criminal" and I wanted Tidal so bad, but when I went to the store it was out of my price range, so I bought When The Pawn... instead. That's what really introduced me to Fiona Apple. Every song on that album was perfect. Then someone I know burned Tidal for me, and I wasn't disappointed.
Fiona Apple pours her heart and soul into her songwriting. It's honest, and beautiful. And most of all, it's powerful. She is, and always will be, one of the best singers on this planet. If you buy this album, you will not regret it. It's absolutely amazing.

Yeah she might be a little moody in public but that energy works in her music. "Tidal" is a bit more mellow and serious than her second album "When the Pawn" but somehow it makes it more intriguing also. This album grows on you as one attempts to decipher her lyrics' meaning and get drawn in by the emotion of her voice and piano. My favorite songs are the reminiscing sound "Pale September", jazzy "Slow Like Honey", the tempo-switching "Carrion", and the singles "Never is a Promise", "Shadowboxer" and "Sleep to Dream". Strangely, I found her biggest hit "Criminal" to be the least memorable so don't base your buying decision on what you've heard on the radio. I bought this back in '98 and still enjoy it today 5 years later.

Even though she's out of the Top Ten in the music business, this album is worth buying, maybe I'm a little biased but I had it play on cassette in my room when I was thinking. She brings back memories, as all music does, with her haunting lyrics and vocals. If I could compare her to anyone I'd say she'd be popular with people who like Tori Amos, Sarah Maclachlan and for people who enjoy a cup of Chamomile while writing poetry. This album is NOT for people who like pop music, peppy music or anything close to Britney Spears.
