Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - EPIC PLEASE RELEASE HER 3RD CD.
Epic has been holding onto what would be Fiona Apple's 3rd CD for a year and a half now. They say it isn't commercial enough. When was she ever commercial? Its a shame that Epic feels that way. There is a drive to bug Epic until they release it. Lets hope it works.
This is Fiona Apple's first CD and it is a good one. Different than your typical mainstream pop, it has a jazzy side and you can feel her bend the notes. She is an original musician unlike the typical pop world where everyone copies each other and there actually only a handful of original songs in existence. Criminal is the highlight of the CD but every song is good. I highly recomend this one for her vocals as well as the piano--for the jazzy feel and the use of differnent dissonances. This CD has excellent orchestration(instrumentation) and again I like her subtle use of dissonaces. I like the fact that she doesn't try to sound like the rest of the pop and rock world. Other noteworthy songs would be: Shadowboxer with a great vocal performance, Slow Like Honey with great piano and vocals. Never Is a Promise. Pale September for its use of a dissonant piano part and her vocals and Carrion which has a haunting feel.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Excerpted from http://kachinacrowe.journalspace.com, #424
The first thing you notice about an Apple album, is how low everything is. Not only does the 'little girl' growl and bellow well below middle-C, but the fast-moving, intricately-intervaled piano accompaniment is solidly written in the bass clef. The result is a rich, soupy sound that is entirely origininal and new if subtly influenced by the nearly monotone work of folk singer Suzanne Vega.

The clearly literary lyrics go for the jugular from the first -

"I tell you how I feel, but you don't care.
I say 'tell me the truth,' but you don't dare.
You say love is a hell you cannot bear,
And I say give me mine back and then go there for all I care."

From there the opening track "Sleep to Dream" rolls into a forceful assault that rises from the bottom of the soul, screaming out to the audience at the bridge:

"Don't even show me your face, 'cuz its a cryin' shame
Just go back to the rock from under which you came".

From there the album slows to a more introspective tone, which eventually dominates the album. Songs like "Sullen Girl," and "The Child is Gone" Are best understood in the context that they are written: at an early age, Apple was raped and much of Tidal is work about her survival.

"They don't know how I used to sail the deep and tranquil seas
All day and all night
He washed me ashore and he took my pearl
And left an empty shell of me."

"Shadowboxer" picks up where "Sleep to Dream" leaves off. It might be my personal favorite track, because it's emotional intensity abosultely burns. Though the song starts off even tempoed and under control by the bridge, its built up serious steam:

"So I'll be sure to stay wary of you love
To save the pain Of once my flame and twice my burn"

The tune is catchy, in the odd way that alternative piano based rock can be, but is ultimately quite satisfying.

The awaited moment. "Criminal." "Criminal" is Apple's best known song, in part because of the unsettling video that hit the MTV airwaves. Momentarily putting aside the Abercrombie and Fitch kiddie porn, and looking soley at the song - "Criminal" is a masterpiece. Lyrically, "Criminal" seems to tell the tale of a young woman suffering from the borderline personality disorder, but that's probably a little deep. I'm sure the intended meaning of the lyrics is a little more mundane: it's the story of a girl who cheated, and boy - she must have cheated bad.

" I've got to make a play
To make my lover stay
So what would an angel say
The devil wants to know
And I need to be redeemed to the one I sinned against
Because he's all I ever knew of love."

Technically, the most interesting aspect of the tune is the use of double-tracking on the second chorus. It's a technique that since the digital revolution is being much abused, but coming into the chorus "what I need is a good defense" the vocal tracks don't quite match up. It's the auditory effect of a serrated knife that might remind one of the chorus to Cocaine, the vocals glow like a neon light.
"Criminal" is not sparse music, but the arrangement is never overbearing. It stays true to the original piano writing but the addition of flutes on the verses and thick string sounds in the chorus and bridge make the song even more intense, and increase it's natural drive. "Criminal" would run away with a lesser vocalist, but Apple's aching melody line remains strong until the last.

Perhaps though, the placement of "Criminal" on the album is unfortunate. It seems that the rest of the album is entirely downhill. Though momentous and more musically meaningful than anything release by female pop artists in the last five years, tracks five through ten seem to pale in comparison to the first four. "Pale September", "First Taste", "The Child is Gone", "Slow Like Honey" and "Carrion" are all strikingly similar. They run into each other very fluidly and can be indistinguishable from each other. By the end of the album, Apple is singing so far in the back of her throat that her words are almost unintelligable. Though "Never is a Promise" is certainly a deep-track gem, being buried in such mire makes it difficult to appriciate. When "Carrion" is over, you'll want to press play again, just to make sure that you leave your stereo and this CD with a good taste in your mouth.

I give this album a four. Four what you say?

Four tickets to Lilith Fair.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - the pawn hasn't hit yet
I have a lot of respect for Ms. Fiona. However.. I was very disappointed over Tidal after hearing the magnificient When the Pawn. It is clear how much Fiona has evolved between those two albums, because on Tidal she can barely form a tangible melody--her voice tends to jump.

The only song that is fully enjoyable is Criminal, with it's light-hearted jazz-rock beat and Fiona's voice gliding across the melody. She performs it very well. On the other hand, "Sleep to Dream," the opener of the album, sounds like an experimental hip-hop track. "Never is a Promise" is earnest but too self-righteous to touch listener's minds. "Carrion," the closer, is really jazzy but does not hit an emotional note.

If you want to enjoy Fiona Apple at her best, I reccommend When the Pawn Instead.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Free Fiona Campaign
Fiona Apple's new album "Extraordinary Machine" has been shelved by SONY because they say it doesn't have a single. Fionahaswings.com along with Yahoo! Group LOVE RIDDEN have come together to unite Fiona fans to help get her record released. If you are a fan of Fiona Apple or just a music fan who hates being told what you should listen to by corporate giants visit www.fionahaswings.com for information on helping the cause.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Wonderful
I only recently rediscovered Fiona Apple. I'm ashamed to admit I almost forgot about her. This album is truly a gem. I can listen to it from begining to end and never skip a track. I love the elements of blues and jazz and the lyrics are so honest and poetic. Also, her voice is very versatile and powerful. "Never Is A Promise" is what made me obsessed with this album. That song is hauntingly beautiful. Fiona is amazingly talented and a true artist. I recommend this album to anyone who wants to hear what I would say is one of the best albums of the past 10 years.
