- Very Pleasant
This album was more of a phenomonon (did i spell that right) for Mariah's career. To date it is her biggest selling album ever. The music continues to satisfy the fans as she sings her heart out. Of course the hits Dreamlover and Hero are included here but sometimes you need look past the #1 hits and check out the other songs like Never Forget You and All I Ever Wanted. This cd will satisfy any ballad thirsty music fan.

Ah! Here we see Mariah Carey starting to gain attention by singing to us in her sweet voice. Music Box's Singles are still aired on the radio until today. It's amazing to have such a gift that she has. We see her going from a rendition of being a little RnB in "Dreamlover" to her classic signature ballads like "Hero", "Without You" and "Never Forget You". Amongst them comes her return to gospel as well. A good sample would be "Anytime You Need A Friend". A Little groving number would be "I've Been Thinking About You". Her voice seems a little more subtle than her last albums which is nice with not so much "screaming" like in Emotions. But her voice is one of the view that can sing gospel very nicely until today. Try "Fly Like A Bird" from her current album "The Emancipation of Mimi" if you know what I am talking about. Music Box grabs those tad-tired vocals of today and is a testment that Mariah has made a mark with her voice. The album is good overall! It may be slow for you club hitters out there, so beware! If you like slow songs then this is for you. But give it a try you never know. Way To Go MC!!!

Music Box showcases the voice of our times. People only wish they could "supposedly overdue" an album..Mariah can take her voice where she wants, and she does. Sappy, yes, great album, yes.

- Largely listless and yet somehow overdramatic- a somewhat o.k effort!-2.5 stars!
First of all, I want to know why "Everything Fades Away" was not put on this album! If I'm not mistaken, this song was released as the B-side to "Hero", and this song is better than almost anything else on this album. Luckily, I happened to stumble across a copy of it on the internet a couple of years ago when I just happened to be looking for non-album Mariah Carey songs that I had never heard before. It is a slow, powerful, ethereal number that is definitely worth seeking out if you can get your hands on a copy. Anyway, on to my "Music Box" review... This album is an o.k. effort by Mariah. It has its strengths, the main one being Mariah's gorgeous voice. The other being some pretty solid songwriting throughout a fair portion of the album. The biggest problem that I see with this album though is that most of the arrangements just seem uninspired and are not very interesting. One exception to this is the title track. This song is absolutely gorgeous with one of the strongest vocal performances of Mariah's career. But even it suffers from some of the same problems that plague this release. This album somehow manages to be bland yet at the same time overdramatic. The dominate theme here seems to be the complete pre-occupation with some totally over-romanticized object of the artists' fantasy. But, I guess you could say the same thing about most of Mariah's music and it is part of what makes some of it so great. When she is "on" her music can be beautiful and downright transcendent. The main problem with this album lies in the arrangements and the production. This is the main reason why this album just sounds generally lifeless overall. But there are still a few pretty strong compositions on here such as "Dream Lover", "Anytime you need a friend", and "Music Box". The first four songs are actually pretty solid, even the saccharine soaked "Hero" is a decent song, its just that it sounds so cliche and overplayed to me that I can't bare to listen to it anymore. There are a few more solid tracks on this album such as the not all inspiring but hopelessly pleasant "Just to hold you once again", and her moderately impressive Babyface collaboration, "Never Forget You". One really positive thing that I can say about this album is that it does a particularly good job of showcasing Mariah's voice and if you are a fan, then it is worth picking up for that reason alone. Overall, the problem with this listless album is that much of the material itself is just downright insubstantial. It is very pleasant but at times you may forget that the album is even on. The only REALLY bad song on here though is the absolutely horrendous "Without You"...man that song is terrible! This album is pretty much for completists and dedicated fans only.

mariah carey has beautifully written ballads and a great voice accompanied by great music and melodies. The classic hits Dreamlover, and especially Hero are on this set. Other highlights include without you, anytime you need a friend, music box and a couple uptempo dance jams. I wouldn't say it's Mariah's best CD even though it's her best selling ever, I think Daydream, Butterfly and Mimi are her best CD's, she stays true to the ballads and voice with only a touch of hip hop/r&b grooves.
