Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - This album is still hot with the smooth basslines today!
I still like the Beastie Boys' "Licensed to Ill" today! I played that tape over and over on a bus trip to Florida in April of 1987 during spring break! The lyrics are still funny! They mention White Castle hamburgers on just about every song that it's so funny! White Castle's sales must have tripled in 1986-1987 because of the Beasties'numerous mentions of them. Mike D, King Ad Rock and MCA were some funny fellows from Brooklyn on this album. The basslines on "Posse In Effect", "Slow And Low","Slow Ride", "Hold It Now", "Time To Get Ill", "The New Style," "Brass Monkey" and others have this smoothness to them and have you dancing in a sleazy and sneaky way! And have you moving your hands in crazy, wild directions too! I still dance to them today the same way at 34 than I did at 17! This was raw, no-nonsense hip-hop here and they really pulled it off! It's still catchy today! And the rock-based numbers "Rhymin' and Stealin", "Fight For Your Right to Party" and "No Sleep Til Brooklyn" are still solid, proving the Beasties could rap over loud rock guitars! Girls is so funny for its short 2 minutes and dorky music. A year before '86, they were the opening act on Madonna's tour. This album really made them big stars and that's why they're more in demand today for tours! Their new single from their upcoming 2004 album is so funky! They still have it a strong 2 decades later!!!!!!! "Licensed To Ill" is still a classic and still funny and funky today!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One Of The Greatest CD's of the '80's and Beyond
The Beastie Boys exploded on the scene when I was a teenager in 1986. I bought the Licensed To Ill cassette tape back then when it first came out. (Wish I still had it!!) Now, I have the cd and will have it forever. What a great bunch of fun, extremely catchy and classic rap music for ALL generations. I read in a previous review that the Beastie Boys will be listened to as much as the Beatles, and I almost agree. It's a masterpiece and feel lucky to remember when it was brand new in '86 and cool to blast on the car stereo in the high school parking lot! Buy it today, and you can STILL blast it in the high school parking lot --If you're a teenager, that is, and not an "old fart" like me who's part of the first rap generation affectionately called "Old School" :(

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - I Did It With a Wiffle Ball Bat
I'll tell you, I'm not generally into rap or hiphop (exceptions being some underground stuff such as the streets or dizzee rascal), but the Beastie Boys are one exception for me. Of all their albums, this one is the best. The smartest lyrics (which are in fact hilarious), the best instrumental work, and the most entertaining. This is one you can party to.
Buy it, it's only 8.99.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Amazing
The most well-known album from the Beastie Boys is also their most infamous! Simply one word to describe it: Masterpiece!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - It was the new sound... and it's still a great freak show
The Beastie Boys LICENSED TO ILL is obnoxious, loud, brash, and STOOOOOPIT! Thank God! These were the qualities that made it both a great rap album and a great headbanging album! When I heard the opening drumbeat--lifted from Zep's "Moby Dick"--I knew these local boys (2 from Brooklyn, 1 from Manhattan) had it right! This album is the Id run wild! (I can't stop using exclamation points!)

Initially, the album was wrongly perceived as a showcase for "Fight for your right". It was equally wrong to claim that the album was an exploitation of black music by four Jewish kids. People forget: imitation is the highest form of flattery. The Beastie Boys obviously respected and admired the burgeoning hiphop sound and wanted to be a part of it. They loved it.

LICENSED TO ILL was really a forum for these three guys and producer Rick Ruben to wake America up from its spandex, hair-metal doldrums and acknowledge that rap could be as powerful as rock. The hybrid produced amazing results like "She's Crafty", "It's Time to Get Ill", "No Sleep til Brooklyn" and "Rhymin' and Stealin". This was as much a breakthrough album as (dare I say it?) Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. And nearly twenty years later, it's finding a new audience with younger listeners. That's innovation. That's inspiration. That is the power of fun!
