- I Don't Like This Band-BUT I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!
This is one of their only fine moments.I had heard Let It Go, and I thought that had some cool riffs, but I heard this song WASTED on the radio and knew I had to buy it.What a great purchase!!I went on to buy High N Dry,etc. Those albums are OK,but On Through The Night, the 1978 45/EP and the bootleg First Strike are the only things you need by this group. They rock with fine musicianship and great lyrics.Any kids starting out as musicians should start playing this kind of stuff, and eventually be able to play a complicated song like Overture, which is the pinnacle of their career.If you have the original LP on Mercury with the skyscraper label-it comes with lyrics.Read along with Overture,and you will be amazed.The band never again came close to writing absolutely brilliant lines like "Time is the essence the priests do say, restore your faith in man, for the job you do and the role you play will help rebuild this land.Through empty streets and dusty fields we'll fight for what we need, protected by our swords and shields we can replant the seed" The song idea was subconciously based on Bohemian Rhapsody, but is very original in it's own right.Sorrow Is A Woman is another very powerful track, switching moods quicker than a kid faking a sickness.I would go as far as to say that Def Leppard was a true metal band for this album, everything after pales in comparison.High n Dry is a good album, but some of the songs are sickeningly similar, the only outstanding track is the instrumental Switch 625.I cant talk about anything after 81, as I dont like hair metal.I saw them live in 87 on the Hysteria tour, and I thought they were awful-they didnt play anything even remotely good except for Let It Go.83-87 were huge years for the group,so most people would not agree with me at all.I applaud the band for changing styles, a band has to try new things, I just didnt care for the new things they were trying.I can't believe On Through The Night is so overlooked by fans and by the band themselves.They should be playing 3 to 4 songs a night from these days.If you can find it, there is a bootleg called First Strike-it has a couple previously unreleased songs from 79 that are exceptional-See The Lights, Glad Im Alive,Heat Street. I think its out on CD as Warchild or something, not as good as On THrough, but close indeed!!!

As with many rock bands, this first release from Def Leppard stands the test of time. One comment I always hear after Def Leppard concerts is, "I wish they would have played something from 'On Through the Night'... Although they have certainly done some incredible things since this very early album, this represents them at their youthful, primal best, stripped free of the heavy production that glosses their later releases. And the songs ROCK.

Let's get serious. If Def Leppard sounded the same on the first album and their latest, that would be like saying that after 20 years U2 or Metallica should have the same sound. Artists CHANGE with time. Def Leppard is no different. I almost threw up the first time I heard the song 'Love Bites' off Hysteria, then I realized that the mighty Lepps were changing with the times. 'Lemon' by U2 was a [dumb]song the first time I heard it too, as well as 'Unforgiven' by Metallica. I have a new respect for bands like Def Leppard, U2, and Metallica for having the balls to change their sound. Good job and forever live Def Leppard!!

- Def Leppard - On Through The Night
The debut of Def Leppard can't get any better. I got this album for Christmas last year along with a bunch of other cd's and this is one of my favorites. It has a much better hard hitting heavier sound than the likes of Pyromania and Hysteria. It is raw and the real deal. Lots of very good songs on this album and a great debut. The sound quality isn't the greatest and def leppard is definetly due for some remasters but it is still a great album. This albumr ocks the whole way through and there aren't any bad songs. My personal favorites are "Rock Brigade", "When The Walls Come Tumbling Down", "Rocks Off" and "Overture". "Overture" is an excellent track timing in at close to 8 minutes. This album is well worth it for any fans who like a mixture of hard rock and heavy metal. Any Def Leppard fan should own this album.

Let me be clear: no matter what everybody says, or wht sales figures prove, I love ON THROUGH THE NIGHT and HIGH 'N DRY. They are, in my humble opinion, the best Leppard albums. Of course Leppard always targeted the American market (the first album has the tune HELLO AMERICA, for God's sake!), but they were still rooted firmly in British heavy metal. But came PYROMANIA, the huge sales of records, and the band was doomed (musically) forever, making very competent, but heartless, hair-metal.
