Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - rocks in its own right
I had this on vinyl back in the day, but my other DL records were on so much they pretty much eclipsed this one as far as spin time. I just bought it last week again on CD and am really enjoying it. I think it's much better than just a decent debut by an up and coming band, or an interesting look at DL before they hit the sound they would run with. Anyone who heard this at the time it came out would have to have realized this band was going no where but up, up, up.
In fact if this album had gotten the production it deserved DL could have gotten an even earlier launch. As it happened though, hearing just this single debut album made John "Mutt" Lange to realize that DL was a band worth working with. He had produced both Highway to Hell and Back in Black, for AC/DC and had an undeniable role in getting AC/DC to superstardom. I can't think of any other music producer with 2 diamond albums by different bands to their credit, diamond being sales of 10M. With this, you will hear what made up his mind to work with this awesome then hard-rockin' band: a great cohesive sound bursting with talent and a powerful synergy within the band that allowed them to explore some different directions equally impressively.
This is completely different from other DL in ways other reviewers have covered. It is not the glam sound DL wound up with on Pyro, and it's completely--like night and day--different even from High 'N' Dry (with Lange producing), which came out right after this the very next year. But the fact that DL could sound so good in three completely different ways, in three consecutive albums--bang, bang, bang--just speaks to the talent of this band all the more. So get this, put it on, turn it up and treat yourself to the first of those different sounds.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A Different Kind Of Lep
I first bought this album back in the late 80's after wearing out my cassette tapes of High 'N' Dry, Pyromania and Hysteria. I was a little surprised by the sound of the album but still enjoyed it. Today, I think this is a case of an album aging well and as the years pass it doesn't seem so out of place in the band's catalogue. Since the release of Yeah! and Songs from the Sparkle Lounge you can really start to get a picture of where the band was coming from in the late 70's. The album is filled with great riffs by Clark and Willis and features decent vocals by Elliott who really hadn't found his voice yet. Overall it should be a staple of any Def Leppard fan's collection.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Raw Leppard
A much rawer Def Leppard than found on later albums, though it suffers somewhat from poor production and vocals that generally miss the mark.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - magic number 12
People dont realize that def leppard had good albums before pyromania and Hysteria. This album is the perfect example! On this album some songs are better than others but on this album you can listen to the whole thing and not skip a song. People overlook this album and that's not fair because this is DEF LEPPARDS in my opinion 2nd best album only behind Adrenalize. this is a great example of NWOBHM. Pete Willis in my opinion is better than Phil Collen who can't solo like him or just can't handle a guitar like him.every one in the band also avoids this album and I clearly don't understand why.I have seen DEF LEPPARD in concert and i think they might have played one song of the whole album which is really a shame because this is a dang good album! Now lets break it down.

1.Rock Brigade 3:09 great opening rocker that has good vocals and a pleasing guitar solo 9/10.
2.Hellow America 3:27 great vocals and a great guitar solo and DEF LEPPARD actually did a good synthisizer 10/10
3.Sorrow As A Woman 3:54 lame acoustics but a good guitar solo and decent vocals and good hooks make up for it 8/10.
4.It Could Be You 2:33 possibly the best song if it's not so short, with a great guitar solo and great hooks it makes a great rocker 9/10
5. Satellite 4:28 weird song a weaker track on the album 6/10
6. When The Walls Come Tumbling Down 4:44 weakest track, just ok 6/10
7.Wasted 3:45 great song, hard rocker, tons of greak hooks 10/10
8.Rocks off 3:42 fast song it's practically a guitar solo the whole song with a fast drum beat 8/10
9.It don't matter 3:21 Not a standout 6/10
10.answer to the master 3:13 Best guitar solo on the abum enough said.9/10
11.Overture 7:44 great slap in your face album closer
So if you like a band with great hooks or you like Def Leppard before they went pop this is a fundementle cd for your collection
