Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - creepy band
I am a fan of both chevelle and a perfect circle. But if you ask me to choose between them?I would say tool.why?because chevelle and a prefect circle have similar vocals. But,Tool blew me away, the first time I heard sober I knew that this band was way better than chevelle and a perfect circle. That doesn't mean that they aren't any good.I recommend Point #1 and Wonder what's next by chevelle and everything by a perfect circle if your fans of this album.

The reason I would pick Tool over Chevelle and a perfect circle is because of their unique sound that overruns the other two.maynard is in a perfect circle but was the best in tool. This is a great album and tool has easily become one of my favorite bands.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - My all time favorite band
Well maybe reading the heading you would see that Tool is my favorite band and good reason why, they came out with Sober and I was hooked.

Well many people might label Tool nu-metal simply because Tool came out near the start of nu-metal but Tool came out 2 years before. Another thing is, it doesn't sound a thing like nu-metal. no rapping, no downtuned guitars, and no self pity lyrics(read the music first). These songs are very psychedelic and hypnotising, the type of music you can get lost to. Maynard James Keenan has a voice that Vilo Varnis(whatever his name is from HIM) wishrd he had his style, voice, ability to freak out people, and his popularity in and respect in the metal community. Adam jones has some killer riffs,

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A rocking, but slightly shallow, early moment in Tool's career
Tool emerged from nowhere (L.A., that is) in the early 90's first with an EP, Opiate, which briefly showcased Tool's signature sound (especially on the title track), but which also showed the lack of depth and polish that the band was characteristic of at the time. All of a sudden 1993 came and with it the first Tool LP, Undertow, which surprised listeners with its impressive musicianship and Maynard's sharp lyrical sense, but now seems a little shallow and amateur (of course, when compared with Tool's later monumental works Aenima and Lateralus).

Tool establish themselves as a riff band on this record. Each song displays Adam Jones' riff-writing sensibilities and the swagger of the rhythm section of Danny Carey and Paul D'Amour in supporting the principal groove. Musically, this can be described as Rush Sabbath; take the heaviness of Sabbath's best work and pair it with the virtuosity and intellectual complexity of Rush, and you have an accurate blueprint of the musical side of things.

Vocally, Maynard sounds like he's still deciding what influences to follow; his ability is distinct, but the instinct and melodic sense that took hold on Aenima is not quite at fruition here. To his creative credit, Maynard's lyrics are better than his singing on this release; songs like "Sober", "Intolerance", and "Prison Sex" were probably shocking back in '93, but today seem to hit the mark quite well, as if Maynard's probing and introspect over 10 years ago somehow hit the mark exactly, without any false steps. The general themes here are of abuse, intolerance, religious hypocrisy (some things would never change), and overall nihilism. These themes apparently were in the early stages of development; a quick listen to Aenima verifies that perhaps Undertow was the buildup and Aenima a final release, in terms of Maynard's demons and sharply pointed verbal barbs at anyone and everyone who failed to grasp the true meanings behind his themes.

Several critics have heaped praise upon the production of Undertow; I see nothing special about it, except that each instrument has a clear spot in the mix, sometimes cuttingly-so; the overall sound doesn't quite blend together or mesh as it sometimes did on Aenima and especially Lateralus. Whether it was because of the simplicity of Tool's harmony or because of the bare-bones mix, I have no idea, but the production sounds like a typical early-90's alternative sound (with razor-sharp gain instead of fuzzy, overdistorted tones).

Undertow is an excellent chronicle of Tool's early career; it shows how far ahead of the game they were even at such an early point, and in retrospect, how far they would (and continue to) come ahead of their earliest achievements. It's not a timeless masterpiece like Lateralus or a brilliant social and psychological treatise like Aenima, but it is a straight-up Tool record; one that is a little sonically simpler, but still enjoyable. And, it's THIS sound that most bands have copied from Tool; none of them can get ahold of the perfection of their later work. For these reasons, and many other valid ones, Undertow is an extremely worthy purchase.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - awsome cd!!!
tool is a very talented and unique band that no one can imitate or copy.
this cd isn't as industrial as the new stuff, however, it is heavier.
the guitar in this album is more distinguisable, and heavier then in the new stuff.
Maynard James Keenan shows his great voice once again in this album.
This album is a great purchase that every metal fan should own.
Sumerization: Great Heavy/Melow album that is worthy of purchase.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Tool's Expansion into the Great
While 'Opiate' was an excellent record, it was only six-songs and possessed an unpolished sound. Undertow expands on this sound and begins the development of their trademark "Darkness". With eerie album art and morbid themes, this album seems also to mark the beginning of Tool solidifying their name in metal history. This album also shows tell-tale signs of Tool branching into the progressive side of metal, with complex instrumentation and varying guitar and bass lines. Drumming, of course, is some of the best you'll hear. The flow of this album is extraordinary, each riff blending into the next, song after song. This album also possesses some of Tool's finest and strongest songs such as 'Prison Sex' and 'Sober'. 'Undertow' and '4 Degrees' are also strong points among a completely solid, replayable album.

Bottom Line: Fans of Tool or any unique music should pick up this chapter of Tool's ever evolving musical style. No lows in this album, and if you like it, be sure to pick up Aenima and Lateralus (Opiate too if you really enjoy the music).
