Though not meant for lyrical singers with 'thin' voices like Roberto Algna, Freni and Carreras proved how wrong it is to assume that Verdi's Aida is only for big-voiced tenors and sopranos.
Jose Carreras and Mirella Freni both gave wonderful performances of their respective 'big' arias.
Freni is even more moving than Leontyne Price, who tends to sing with a monotonic big voice, while Freni is able to bring about all the dynamics and nuances. And she sung very successfully those so-called 'spinto' roles of Puccini, too. So why query her calibre as Aida?
