Editorial Review:

Album Description:
On New Orleans Brass a veritable who's who of contemporary New Orleans musicians and vocalists demonstrate why the city continues to be one of the world's most vibrant musical centers. Throughout the years, New Orleans brass bands developed a musical culture unlike any other, with a special march-and-dance rhythm that has flavored all New Orleans music including rhythm and blues, jazz and funk.

The New Orleans brass tradition experienced a dramatic renaissance in the 1950s and 60s, as traditional jazz bands proliferated, and a new breed of brass band -- one that added R&B sounds -- began to tour the world. Out of that renaissance came the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, one of the city's most celebrated musical ambassadors. They are featured here with Dr. John on "It's All Over Now." In the early 1980s, a younger generation joined the second brass revival when Kermit Ruffins and a group of his high-school friends founded the renowned Rebirth Brass Band.

Unique to this collection is John Boutté's moving version of the spiritual "I'll Fly Away," recorded especially for this release. The Preservation Hall Hot 4 provides their rendition of "Dinah" and The Dukes of Dixieland deliver their version of the New Orleans classic "When the Saints Go Marching In."

The enhanced CD includes a video for "Do They Play Jazz in Heaven?" featuring Ingrid Lucia, Irvin Mayfield and other New Orleans stars.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Mardi Gras comes alive
Did you make it to Mardi Gras this year? I did, although I never left Pennsylvania to get there. All it took was slipping "New Orleans Brass" into the stereo, and Bourbon Street materialized around me in all its festive splendor.

"New Orleans Brass" is another fine offering from Putumayo, the world music label you want scouring the Earth to find the finest in ethnic and geo-specific sounds. In this case, New Orleans was the destination, and just shy of a dozen brass bands -- some with singers, some without -- fill the streets with that distinctive joyful sound.

This is irresistable stuff, and you'll only need to listen for a few moments before you're breaking out your beads and your mouth is watering for a little post ... Read More:

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great CD!
This is another great CD from Putomayo Presents. Very cool drumbeats and a lot of great brass horns are on this CD. I particulary liked tracks one, three, and St. James Infirmary.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Modern New Orleans music that's timeless
"New Orleans Brass" is proof positive that Katrina hasn't deadened the horns of the city's finest musicians. Putumayo World Music has compiled samples from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band with Dr. John, the Preservation Hall Hot 4, Kermit Ruffins, the Dukes of Dixieland and seven other groups that prove conclusively the resurrection of New Orleans' signature music. John Boutte', every bit as good a singer as his sister Lillian, does a fine job on "I'll Fly Away," a 19th century spiritual. Bob French's Original Tuxedo Jazz Band and Leon "Kid" Chocolate do a great rendition of "St. James Infirmary," and the current personnel of the Dukes wrap it up with a rousing version of "Saints." A 35-page booklet of liner notes and an enhanced DVD tune are bonuses ... Read More:
