Editorial Review:
Product Description: Are You Lookin' at Me? is Colin Hay's first studio album of new material in over five years. A tuneful, insightful meditation on life, love, sobriety, maturity and perseverance, the album finds Hay at the absolute peak of his craft. As a writer and vocalist, he has never been more masterful: finding intriguing new angles on instantly relatable scenarios, skewering and savoring in equal measure. His less acclaimed but no less formidable skills as arranger, engineer and bandleader insure that each song is supported by evocative musical backdrops ranging from electronic textures to plaintive acoustic balladry to classic guitar-driven pop. Are You Lookin' at Me? is unified by Hay's immediately identifiable voice, relentless curiosity, wonder and a decidedly uncluttered sound which has its roots in Hay's consistently busy tour schedule.

I ordered this along with an acoustic album by Colin Hay, "Going Somewhere". I listed to "Going Somewhere" first, and was mesmerized by its lovely acoustic vocals and guitar, which really let the songwriting shine. Then I popped in "Are You Looking at Me?" expecting more of the same. I was surprised to hear full arrangements on this album, but listened attentively to see if I was struck again by the songwriting and performance. I really wasn't. I feel the arrangements/production choices on several of the tracks contain distracting sounds or background vocals, and that they really take the focus away from the songwriting. Having recently discovered Colin's solo work, and read some about his love of songwriting, I have a genuine respect for him. ... Read More:

This album shows the depth of Colin Hay. The songs on this album pull from a wide array of talents including spoken word to incredible instrumental harmonies. Any music lover young or old can appreciate Colin Hay's impressive ability to write a song that is real and relevant to all people. Like other Colin albums, after listening, you feel like you are friends with Colin Hay. He's more than just a musician, he's a friend. He has really found a way to relate real human emotion into his music.
I am known as a cold and heartless person, but this album has found a soft spot in my heart.

Colin's newest CD 'Are You Looking At Me?' has become the main source of song for me of late. Not only do I love singing along with Colin, I enjoy playing my guitar with this CD. (I say that with the utmost humility as my playing is simply rhythm and not even close to Colin's terrific style) I was privileged enough to hang out with Colin after a performance this year at the Museum Of Making Music in Carlsbad, CA. where Colin and his beautiful wife performed. In the 160 seat concert hall, standing room only, Colin's voice skated around the room as if it was on wheels. I LOVE your voice Colin! The tone is exceptionally smooth and fluid. Needless to say, I bought all 3 Cd's that night. What a nice man. Both Colin and his wife are incredibly approachable, ... Read More:

Overkill has always been one of my favorite songs, but I never thought to check and see what Colin Hay has been up to since then. My loss. I've been listening to this CD nonstop since picking it up. Added bonus it's a perfect soundtrack for the summer - at turns witty, fun, reflective, and poignant but always melodic, catchy, and wonderfully sing-alongable.
If you get a chance to see him live, another treat is in store. He's very funny and relaxed, his band is tight and his lovely, energetic wife provides heavenly backing vocals and an infectious energy and joy.
For a few other acts that started in the 80s but are still producing wonderful music, check out newer stuff from Waterboys, Roddy Frame (formerly Aztec Camera), Morrissey, ... Read More:
