Amazon.com: With the release of her debut Tanto Tempo in 2000, the Brazilian singer Bebel Gilberto and the late DJ Suba redefined the bossa nova sound. Her sophomore effort, produced by Marius de Vries, the soundmeister behind Madonna, Annie Lennox and Bjork, was recorded in Rio, Bahia, London and New York. Gilberto's cool contralto sings sweetly over synths, strings, percussion acoustic piano and horns. Daniel Jobim and Pedro Baby contributed compositions. Caetano Veloso's "Baby" features lyrics by Os Mutantes, and Carlinhos Brown's candomblé-cadenced, "Aganju" swings with a nod to Africa. Bebel's hushed vocals reveal the influences of her father, the legendary Joao Gilberto, and of her mother Miucha on the electro-bossa beats of "Winter." Ditto the ocean-breezed "O Caminho," with jazzy orchestrations and pianisms provided by Joao Donato. This disc aims for the ear rather than the hips, but don't be surprised if future remixes could flip that sonic script. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Drift back to the 70's beaches of South America (a la' Girl from Imponema). An extremely refreshing change from US Top 40, & Rock radio. Romantic, sensual, & alluring are the only ways to describe this gem. Soft yet powerful melodies ooze from this soothing, uplifting sensual female crooner with a renowned Brazilian signature.

I loved this CD. Bebel Gilberto selected a great set o musics. The quality of the recording is superb.

Beautiful (and still single) Brazilian chanteuse, Bebel Gilberto (1966), is the daughter of João Gilberto and singer Miúcha. Produced by Bjork-studio genius, Marius de Vries, Bebel's 2004 self-titled solo album is an intoxicating, haunting fusion of bossa nova, música popular brasileira, samba, and latina pop. (Having defined the genre with his 1964 album, Getz/Gilberto, one can almost hear João Gilberto's genetic influence in these songs.) Inquisitive minds must wonder how many babies have been conceived as a result of this sensual recording. The complete album tracklist includes:
1. Baby 3:49
2. Simplesmente 4:49
3. Aganjú 4:44
4. All Around 4:44
5. River Song 4:57
6. Every Day You've Been ... Read More:

This is an excellent CD for Bossa Nova, Rumba, and Samba. The best selection is 'Summer Samba.'

Tanto Tempo was amazing but I think this self-titled album is more consistent. It's like crack and I can't stop playing it. Amazing production and an amazing, angelic voice. What more do you need for a great album? Perhaps deep, insightful lyrics? Most of this is in Portugese and Bebel's passionate (and sometimes playful) delivery make even the most simple, broken-english laden songs seem deep and insightful. And to think, there are people out there who think Britney Spears and the Pussy Cat Dolls are at the upper-echelon of fine music. If people only knew what they were missing out on.
