Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: Singer/pianist Diana Krall breaks new ground interpreting modern standards by Tom Waits, Mose Allison, and Joni Mitchell, as well as compositions by herself and new husband, Elvis Costello. Krall's piano-jazz cred comes through loudly and clearly on her Count Basie-styled version of the Bonnie Raitt staple "Love Me Like a Man" (written by folk-bluesman Chris Smither). But it's the collaborations with her spouse that unearth untapped emotional nuances of her velvet voice; many are reminiscent of Bill Evans's moody, impressionistic pieces. The title track, "Narrow Daylight," "Abandoned Masquerade," and "I’m Coming Through" all deal with love and loss. "Departure Bay," a picturesque ode to her hometown of Nanaimo, B.C., proves that this is the start of something big, and that two heads--and hearts--are better than one. --Eugene Holley Jr.

I errantly overlooked this album. Maybe I had Krall burn-out. But overlooking this piece of work was a mistake corrected. It's wonderful.

In 2004, Diana Krall tried something different and was savaged for it.
Up until that year, Krall had been riding high. She crept slowly to the world's attention although the jazz clan knew of her long before the rest of us did. Her first breakout CD was All for You, a Tribute to the Nat King Cole trio. After another CD devoted to love songs, Krall exploded on the world stage in 1998 with When I Look in Your Eyes. That CD had the distinction of being the first jazz CD to be nominated for the Album of the Year Grammy. She followed with 2001's The Look of Love, a lush, orchestral album, rich in jazz history with a modern touch. The DVD, Live in Paris, captured Krall at the zeitgeist of this run.

Tremendous disc. Diana's voice is great, the mike is close with a fantastic breathy texture to her voice. Fantastic backing group with a swing/bluesy feel - rhythmic. I think her 'Temptation' is the best version I've ever heard of this track. More please!

I'm a jazz fan, and a big fan of Diana. I put off buying this CD for some time because none of the songs were familiar to me. Finally, I broke down and bought it. The songs are all in a blues vein, and not jazzy. If that suits your taste, then you'll like this CD. It's well done, but too downbeat for me.

I'm a big fan of Diana Krall and was very surprised at the quality of her voice on this cd. Sorry, but I like jazz that makes me wanna stomp my feet and snap my fingers and make me get up and dance, not put me to sleep. The lyrics are so drawn out and her voice sounds strained. I wish she would do a tribute to Frank Sinatra, the capitol years. I would love to hear her rendition of Witchcraft.
