Amazon.com: Soulive are proof that jazz remains a living organism that continually evolves from its past to make music for the present. Now a quartet with their addition of a saxophonist, Soulive brew a seamless funky concoction of '60s jazz-organ grooves, '70s funk, '90s acid-jazz, and fresh hip-hop that defies classification. The basic vibe of the music mirrors the great organ-guitar-sax era of the '60s, and these twentysomething musicians capture the nightclub feel of that time on "Tuesday Night's Squad" and the stirring ballad "Alkime." Dance-music fans will dig tracks that feature hip-hoppers Black Thought (from the Roots) and Talib Kweli. And for those who need their '70s groove on, they quote Earth Wind & Fire directly on "Flurries" and pay homage to the Brecker Brothers' highly syncopated style on "Whatever It Is." Dave Matthews, who Soulive opened for on a long tour of sold-out rock venues, returns the favor here on "Joyful Girl," but he is by far the least interesting aspect of this 13-song set. As their album title suggests, in jazz, Soulive is what's next. --Mark Ruffin

With all the negative reviews for this I thought I'd chime in. This album is not Smooth Jazz. Smooth Jazz is practically a brand name, a commodity made for consumption while dining at trendy restaurants, waiting on hold, or hanging in an elevator. There are moments on the record that are smooth, but not commodified. Plus the styles are wide ranging, and there are gritty funky moments to be had as well. Overproduced? There are ends of tracks left raw, improvised on the spot and untouched by protools. Not really Jazz? Well, what is then? I think it just might be too black for some folk. There, I said it.

If you are someone who listens to nothing but hip-hop music, you will probably think you are hearing "jazz" when you rip this. That's what scares me - that and all of the other things that Blue Note seems to be willing to do to water down their brand. To someone who listens to a lot of jazz (actual jazz) and blues and rock/pop/soul and classical and world music, like me, this stuff will sound like slick formulaic clap-track party music that leaves no back-beat behind, with very little improvisational interest, and absolutely no compositional interest. I wonder how the band can even keep these tunes straight in their own heads when they're trying to play them live, but then I do have to remind myself that Eskimos are reported to use over ... I have always been real critical of any band trying to recreate that new jazz/bebop/smooth sound but when i heard of soulive's cd "Next" it made me think twice of jazz to be exciting. This instrumental band has that old school meets new school and not many people can pull it off. On the cd of course the off beats of this group is captivating as the audience can hear their laid back grooves proving that this band is doin what they love. with the intergration of organ and that combo feel it blows one's mind as an individual can "dig" these guys grooves. This cd not only is hip and happen but it can easily bring people of differnt types of jazz together as it bring ideas of old school jazz with the improv. THe best song on that cd would have to ... It isn't a crime to try something different. Delving into another part of oneself, one's work. That is what art is about, a point that many of these 'fans' seem to miss. What a bunch of armchair musicians!!! This is a quite diverse, peppery, thumping recording. No, it is not pure jazz, but it fits into the jazz realm. Commencing with TUESDAY NIGHT'S SQUAD, they sort of warn you that this isn't their normal menu, but that it is going to be fun. LIQUID kicks a**!! JOYFUL GIRL, with all due respect to Dave, would have probably been better suited to a singer of the ilk of Billy Porter or Luther or even Mick Hucknall (if blue-eyed soul was the angle!!). CLAP! is an instant club/hip-hop classic. One cannot resist that tough beat. NE-NE is particularly ... Read More:

After wondering weather I liked this album, hated it, didn't really care, had no opinion about it etc. I finally came up with the conclusion that you can't listen to this album in a jazz frame of mind, or else the hip hop numbers will eat you up. Nor can you listen to this album with a hip-hop, rock, or pop frame of mind.
You just got to be open to EVERYTHING, and I mean everything. This is probaly one of the most diverse albums I have ever heard. Not usually a fan of rap. R&B, hip-hop etc.. but the hip-hop numbers weren't that bad.
As much as the hip-hop tracks seem to take over the album for many people, Soulive still has their groove. That same groove you heard on their first recordings. Now, they just added a little something ... Read More:
