Editorial Review:

Album Details:
Japanese Version featuring an Introduction Written by Mike Portnoy, the Drummer from Dream Theater.

Amazon.com:
The songs on Vapor Trails may not be as instant or accessible as those on their previous albums, but the Canadian trio is definitely playing harder and bolder than they have in years. Layers of guitars have replaced most of the keyboards, setting Alex Lifeson free to explore new territories and textures. Geddy Lee is also given more playing space, such as on "Peaceable Kingdom," where his bass parts take the role of rhythm guitar. The arrangements are intricate and interesting throughout, yet never overwhelming. "Secret Touch" twists and builds from melody to a monsterous jam, while Neil Peart's awe-inspiring drums give extra power and dynamics to the album's heavier numbers, such as "Nocturne" and the bombastic lead cut, "One Little Victory." Lee's vocals and harmonies add great depth to "Earthshine," while the airy "How It Is" soothes with nice open chords and jangling guitars. Rush has taken one step forward while keeping one foot back in a rawer sound, all the while continuing to evolve musically. --Gail Flug

Customer Reviews
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Unjustly Underrated
Although this is clearly not on par with their essential releases from 1976 - 1982, Vapor Trails does not deserve the harsh criticism it receives from many fans. I love the heavy, smoldering guitar driven sound and find it to be a much more satisfying listen then Power Windows. Earthshine, Nocturne, Secret Touch, Ceiling Unlimited and Vapor Trail are all excellent tracks. I would love to hear How It Is as a concert 1st set track and Nocturne as a concert 2nd set track. Give this one another listen, it certainly rewards multiple listens,

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - MUSH - Not RUSH
Do you remember why you first like Rush??? Was it the crisp dymanics, the silence between the notes, the freshness??? That was why I first liked them. Well... That is all gone on this over-produced NOISY, NO-DYNAMICS album. It is a constant hum, and it gives me a headache after the first song, and it just keeps going. Constant NOISE.

Alex, Geddy, Neil... I hope you are reading this. I think you have forgotten from whence you came... Get back to the beginning, or you have been reduced to over-produced GARBAGE.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - My Favorite Headache
Very good record (if perhaps a little too long) that is completely ruined by a terrible production. A complete sonic overhaul would knock the rating up by a star. A remaster is sorely needed.

Contains one exceptional song: Earthshine

Additional standout tracks include: Vapor Trail, Nocturne, Ceiling Unlimited, Ghost Rider and Out of the Cradle

Definitely recommended for Rush fans. Newcomers should start elsewhere.

Creativity - 5/10
Songwriting - 7/10
Lyrics - 8/10
Production - 3/10

Overall - 6/10

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Noise
I'm a huge Rush fan. However, who knows if I like this album. It's mastered so badly that I can't listen to the whole disc. It's dynamically-compressed and clipped; every song sounds like noise to me.

My recommendation is to wait until Rush masters this disc properly before purchasing.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - the BEST post-Moving Pictures Rush album, no joke
I am amazed that this album is not viewed in a more favorable light, even by long-time Rush aficionados. Shame on us!
After 1 listen, it's peculiar and somewhat grating.
After 3 listens it's a hairy monstrosity with some catchy hooks.
After 5 listens....oh boy - that's when this record hits like a ten-ton tractor.
This album has so much character, vibe and genuine emotional weight that I can't get away from it. I LOVE this recording to pieces. The triumphant return and rebirth of professor Neil Peart, right from the double-bass-pounding-get-go!
The trio deluxe play with an intensity and fury not heard since the 2112 days. Only this time they are able to spread out the grooves more, come up for air, and then unleash ... Read More:
